I got this today, was going to give it a cursory look and then
sign--after all, it purports to give consumers the right to choose the
medical treatments they want, even if "unapproved" at the time. But
this part sticks in my throat:
--------------
This bill contains numerous patient protections, including strict
informed consent procedures. ... Information about beneficial results
must be reported to the National Center for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine at NIH, and information about negative results
must be reported to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
**Even one adverse event will result in the unapproved product being
removed from the market.** [emphasis mine]
------------
WHAT??? "Even one adverse event *will* result in the ... product being
removed from the market"??? This looks to me like a "Trojan horse".
If pharmaceuticals had to be withdrawn because of "even one adverse
event" there would be none on the market!
Thoughts, anyone? Is there any *possible* way that this (AMTA) could
be anything other than a disaster?
Here's the rest of it:

Hi Shannon,
Help Pass the Access to Medical Treatment Act
----------
It's your health, and when you're a patient the treatment you receive
should be your decision. The Access to Medical Treatment Act (AMTA)
currently being considered by Congress gives back the authority to
patients and their doctors to use medical treatments and devices that
have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Urge
Congress to pass the Access to Medical Treatment Act >>
The Access to Medical Treatment Act (ATMA) is legislation being
considered by Congress that amends current laws restricting patients
access to critical medical treatments - and restores your right to
choose the best treatment for you.
This is a bill that could save lives. If passed it gives Americans
access to therapies that are being used safely and effectively in
other countries, but which are not available here because the FDA has
not approved them.
Urge Congress to act swiftly to pass the Access to Medical Treatment
Act: http://go.care2.com/e/HHh/dr/ODCa
The FDA drug approval process is lengthy, expensive, and can take over
a decade to complete. Many companies are financially unable to undergo
this process, and many patients do not have the time to wait that long.
In addition, many of these health treatments have been researched,
approved and used safely and effectively in other countries for years.
Passing this bill will allow people access to treatment and medicine
they otherwise could not have.
And doctors using alternatives in medicine, nutritionists, naturopaths
and others will finally be free to use the therapies they believe are
best for their patients, and no longer be harassed, censured or subject
to recrimination.
People should have the right to choose their medical treatment. Sign
our petition and urge your Representative to pass the Access to
Medical Treatment Act.
Thank you for caring to make a difference today -- with Care2,

Re: US-AMTA, another Health Freedom bill--Worrisome!
Dear Shannon,
Regarding the Access to Medical Treatment Bill, as so often happens
on the WWW, the terms of the bill are being misinterpreted. One
adverse event does not mean a product or practice will be removed from
the market. If a product or practice is proven to be dangerous, it
will cease.
I never take anyone's word for anything without researching it
myself. In this case, if you go to
you can read
the bill for yourself. The http://thomas.loc.gov/ website is the
place to go to look up any bill in Congress or the Senate.
Regards,
Catherine
