As this feeling of illness with the infection I feel is potentially serious I feel I would treat aggressively with a high potency. I have done this and almost immediately that feeling of illness vanishes. An allopathic colleague when I recently presented this option thought that was idiotically brave .
Bryonia certainly if desire to hold breast and thirsty but red and throbbing I think is a Belladonna indication. Best Wishes, Jean
Mastitis
Re: Mastitis
Hi, Rochelle,
Ask about modalities -- does she prefer the hot compress or the cold? Etc. If it's a remedy like Bryonia, it will be so painful that she'll hold the breast while going downstairs or walking. With Phytolacca, you're more likely to see spasms of pain radiating from the breast and probably more hardness and swelling.
Peace,
Dale

Re: Mastitis
Thanks Dale- I think I established that Bell would be the best to start with, then we will see. Apparently Bryonia is lumpy which she said it was a bit but it was the overall redness and the fact that it had been throbbing the previous day (so why did she not tell me then?????) that clinched the Bell.

Re: Mastitis
I do think that she is sensible enough to go to emergency at the hospital if she thought she was that ill . Will phone her this morning- it is a bit early yet!!

Re: Mastitis
HI Rochelle, the Belladonna is usually really good if breast really red and hot and throbbing! And if it works don’t be too quick to go to Phytolacca just watch for return of symptoms for a while – however I often find that a bit of Phytolacca after can clear final inflammation (+ hardness in the area) and stop recurrences.
Once babies get to about 6 months they have a propensity to hold onto the breast with their hand often quite firmly and this can sometimes cause a blockage in the ducts and lead to mastitis – or other times child may have a cold and have transferred infection to breast (esp if they are teething) as they tend to ‘chew’ at breast often causing small breaches in the nipple skin. Other times no discernable reason.
I find that if they massage the area of the mastitis as it heals, gently towards the nipple while feeding, it helps to empty the quadrant or quadrants properly so that the same thing doesn’t occur in milk that doesn’t empty and stagnates and it also keeps scar tissue from forming in a way that affects the flow of milk.
Can continue to feed the baby even with mastitis (in fact is often quickest way to solve the problem if they can stand any pain it causes) as engorgement with mastitis is a horrible problem. If engorged - Cabbage leaves (layer just under the outer green ones) with the ‘spine’ cut out and kept in fridge until needed – place inside that bra against the breast will usually quite quickly reduce engorgement and make breast much more comfortable (if > warmth let cabbage leaves reach room temp) – the leaves get quite soggy after a while so remove and replace – remember also that they can reduce the production form that breast so when they resume feeding may need to feed quite frequently from that breast to stimulate the supply again. Also good for emptying breast fully for a while to stop mastitis returning.
Hope this helps regards Pauline
