Hi, Lisa.

Your situation sounds as if it is difficult -- having an unneutered dog
surrounded by feral bitches coming into heat on a regular basis. I suspect
your "true love" scenario may be a bit anthropomorphic, since a male dog
will desperately try to mate with any and all bitches in heat that it
perceives. It's the way dogs very naturally preserve their genetic code.
Some species tend to be monogamous, but not dogs. So in a way, your camp
environment creates a perennially uncomfortable, difficult situation for a
confined unneutered male dog. In any case, his behaviors when confronted
with bitches in heat are totally normal, healthy, and natural -- not disease
symptoms. I loved your description of his herding games. Border collies
are wonderful dogs, and the herding instinct certainly is very, very strong
in them. I think you've developed a living situation that is very good for
Ben in many ways.

hi lisa, well the dog email is easier to answer than the abortion ones, so i
will start here. i am delighted that you can get the book. let me know what
you think of it. i have not read it yet, but glanced through and it is
known, as i said earlier, as the best one to read. re what rosemary said
about anthromorphism: in their book when elephants weep, jeffrey moussaieff
masson and suan mccarthy (sorry, when i cited it earlier, i did not include
her name)give a very scholarly and detailed and footnoted discussion about
"anthromorphism". it is well worth reading. i am rooting for the dog and
his lover. good luck, sheila

Dear Lisa, Shelley suggested Lyssin, or hydrophobinum as it is also called.
This is interesting as many aspects fit this case. They are in a superior
state of excitement, quick perception, amazing acuteness of understanding -
clairvoyent - that uncanniness that ben has shown, and clairaudient as well.
There are convulsions (but we don't know if he had one or not). Inclinations
to bite and chew, they break out of any confines and run off. There is a
great desire for salt which might explain the excessive licking and there is
the obvious connection with water and lots of spitting and licking. There is
strictures in the throat and epiglottis and so they make all sorts of
strange noises - this also might be why his appetite isn't that good. Not
sure if there is a specific connection to chicken though. As Shelley says
there is lasciviousness (but normal in a male dog). It would be more
appropriate to include a lack of interest if that was the case. What is his
barking like byt the way? The limbs normally show some king of chorea,
weakness, cramps, heaviness, trembling. The left sciatic nerve is effected,
all < when rising from sitting (a common SX). Wounds heal quickly. There is
a bluish discolouration around any injury. There are pustules, malignant
ulcers and cancerous sores.

Clarke is probably your best bet if you need to read more.

Best wishes, Joy

Dear Joy,
Bless you for posting this. Unfortunately, I don't have Clarke's yet
either!! (but this one is already on my list;))

Gosh -everything seemingly fits - the more I read! (too good to be true
syndrome is hitting me...and something is telling me not to jump too soon
here)
He looks shaky (weak) when he gets up - creaky (not quite a tremble..but as
if he is going to tremble!!) - like he's stiff and uncomfortable....then
once he's up for a moment and moving - he's fine.... haven't noticed a
particular side that is affected over the other in this regard. (lump is on
right side..but that is where the injection was...so probably irrelevant
from the issue of *sides*)

What is clairaudient? Forgive my ignorance on that one;).

His barking? Normal really. He is not yappy. It's your typical macho Border
Collie bark;), lol. He is quite macho when 'protecting' the house...if he
senses something...he will rush outside - bark his head off for a few
seconds...run back inside - strutting as if to say 'see, I scared'em off Mum
and Dad' - then he goes into his submissive mode and laps up all the
attention we lavish on him when we praise him for what he just did. No
excessive barking either; he will stop if you tell him stop - or that
everything is okay (i.e. no need to bark anymore).

Just curious - why the question on barking? I'm intrigued!!

Sincerest regards,
Lisa
