Cold coagulation

Had a patient in today who has had a biopsy after a suspect smear test. She says that she will probably be having cold coagulation treatment which lasts 30 seconds and is less painful than the biopsy. So what on earth is cold coagulation treatment - cryotherapy??

Yes, cold coagulation is hot cautery of the cervix!

Cold coagulation cannot be the same as hot cautery - the two terms are
mutually exclusive... cauterisation involves the use of a "heated"
instrument (cautery) while cryotherapy uses the application of "extreme
cold" via a cryoprobe.
