homeopathy killed my wife

Post by Jeremy Crowley »

If they published details of every person killed by conventional medicine
there would be no room in the newspaper for any other news.

Oddly, no one ever spashes a huge headline proclaiming "Chemotherapy Killed

My suggestion is that the organisations representing homeopaths along
with the colleges and pharmacies, pool their resources to properly
market and defend homeopathy.

Some random thoughts on how this could be done:

£10/20 per head of membership

That would provide enough starting capital to pay someone to spearhead
it professionally and running costs

1- rebuttal group ( paper + radio media)
2- -pro active disemmination to public (media inclusion ,
radio/plays/articles/etc)
3-TV adverts/shows/eventing
----
Set up as a charity??Or NPO (non profit org)

Hi SImon,
I basically agree with you, but at the same time I feel a little
squeamish about "marketing" ourselves as a group, since "marketing"
seems to so much feed into just the sorts of problems we are
seeing--reporting only certain facts, permitting only certain views,
and an "us versus them" mentality. And "convincing us to buy" rather
than just teaching, and offering. I suppose this is *partly* just my
own issues, yet it also seems to be pretty much part-and-parcel of a
"commercial" mindset.

While I'm not eager for us to go that way, I do agree wholeheartedly
that we need to (with increasing urgency) unite, counter the
disinformation, stand up for ourselves, and "spread the word". How do
we balance these two sides?

They are the same "side"; not two separate "sides".

We either let people know what we do, how we do it, and what they can expect
when they come to see us, or we have others (mis)inform them for us.

Which is, essentially, the situation we suffer from right now.

In India, which has the largest group of practising homeopaths might
show the way. In India there were allopathic doctors who out of
interest took up homeopathy. Dr.AURamalrishnan and his father are of
this group ( self included). Most of them suffered in the hands of
their medical societies ( in old days) or at least lost some respect
in the eyes of their professional brethren . Then there were native
medicine doctors ( Ayurveda practitioners etc) who took this up and
practised a combination of Ayurveda, Homeopathy etc. Then the
Government wanted to regularize this practice and gave licensing
exam through out India and registered the people who at that time
had demonstrable experience etc. Once this was done Govt. put a
stop to giving any more registrations for people who just come out
of some institute claiming that they have clinical knowledge. Then
regular homeopathy colleges were started - these offered the same
kind of education that allopathic colleges were giving except that
they had homeopathy specific subjects taught and did not have
allopathic therapeutics. These colleges had to stick to state
approved syllabus and the students usually went thru some common
statewide exam. So now no one without such approved training can
call themselves legally homeopathy doctors. Even though there are
health practitioners who call themselves homeopaths they are
illegal, have no standing and thrive only because of corruption in
enforcing agencies.

So the first step is defining what is the core teachings / syllabus
that is a must. Then all the splinter groups have to come together
and make a representation to the govt. wherever possible or agree to
stick to a common standard. Every school needs to have a hospital or
clinic attached with a demonstrable number of clients / patients
before being allowed to train homeopaths. The training needs to be
as rigorous as at least given for nurses if not more. If you have
too many groups controlling this we are once again diluting the
standards, do not present a common front. This same group should be
the one that certifies even allopathic doctors to practise
homeopathy - only then there could be a minimum common body of
knowledge shared across all practitioners. ( I am not sure how this
could be done in UK where there is an already entrenched body giving
Faculty Membership etc.) But at least for others this would be the
way to go. It would take time to build up but that is part of
legitimizing the profession.

We all know the power of homeopathy and it is riling to be thrown
into the same bucket as many other "alternative" medicines. In one
of my earlier postings I have mentioned why we should not be part of
alternative medicine group. Why should we allow ourselves be clubbed
with Reiki, Pranic healing etc? And then how would you hope to get
more respect than snake oil salesmen?

This is the process that has taken place in Australia over the last 10
years. It required all the homeopathic splinter groups coming together
in a cooperative rather than competive manner (you can imagine how
difficult this was) to define the the minimum standards, competencies,
training, etc required before somebody should carry the title of
homeopath. A peak body was established (AROH - Australian Register of
Homeopaths)for registration purposes only of appropriately trained
homeopaths and forthcoming graduates. Government recognition and
accreditation of competencies was sought and gained because the
profession had organised itself.

Health care funds (insurance groups) now provide rebates to their
members for services provided by AROH practitioners. Separate
homoepathic associations still exist (but less than in the past - many
amalgamated) to meet the day to day needs of homeopaths - publicity,
continuing education, government liason, insurance, etc. Committee
members usually work in a voluntary capacity - and a fine job they do
too. These associations no longer have a registering function though
membership level is dependent on training.

It is not yet utopia and there is still much work to be done but the
profession in Australia is in a more secure state with a greater
degree of credibility than it had 10 years ago. It took a lot of
vision, hard work, and the preparedness of separate groups with vested
interests to bury a few hatchets and give some ground. The benefits
for the profession as a whole have been enormous.

Same in New Zealand, called the Council of Homeopaths. There is no
mandatory registration, but the biggest private health insurer, Southern
Cross, covers up to $400/year for visits to registered homeopaths (and
naturopaths). There is a small splinter group, but I have not heard from
them for ages......

Being a small country, the Council does everything including the yearly
conference, while colleges and pharmacies bring more international speakers
every year.

So it is possible.....

This is amazing Fran,
Congratulations to you all in AUstralia. I do remember when Chris
Gillen was talking about something going on in this regard a couple of
years back ... and she was fine being called a Quack.. (or is that
what she said? Chris?)

I"ll look forward to hearing about what helped the oversensitive patient.
