Silly question. The answer is obvious - they can't spell!

Sorry, I mean it as a joke and hope not to offend anyone.

Spelling changes due to the living/dynamic nature of language. The Americans
have shortened a lot of word e.g. programme = program.

Just think what is going to happen to English with the advent of sms
messaging. = Jst thk wot is goin 2 happen to Eng w/ the advent of sms msg.
