artificial insemination etc

Post by Soroush Ebrahimi »

Dear Colleagues

I try to ask about family history from most patients I see. However, in addition to people who have been adopted, or artificially conceived by donor egg or sperm, and IVF we have cases of children who although brought up in a family but the person who they think is their biological father is not!

(Some 25% + of children born in UK are out of wed-lock - but this does not mean that they do not know who their biological father is.
But in some cases, even the mother does not know who the father is as at the time of intercourse she was too drunk, or that she was raped and the rapist escaped).

So the maternal family medical history is more reliable than the paternal. However it should also be taken in case it can provide some interesting data.

When it comes to need for AI or IVF, both can have an immense effect in the feelings generated in the mother during her pregnancy, fear, anxiety etc as well as the father. These feels, especially those of the mother, can be passed on to the child.

Additionally, in cases of IVF, there are many incidents of abnormality and birth defects. These are probably as a result of mechanical as well as chemical damage to the egg/sperm during the process.
