Global health officials say that the human antiviral drug amantadine will be ineffective against a potential avian influenza epidemic because Chinese farmers have used it to treat chickens. Amantadine is one of only two types of drugs used to treat influenza in humans, and according to some reports has been used on Chinese chickens since the late 1990s.
