TMJ

Post by Rochelle Marsden »

Has anyone had any success with TMJ temporomandibular joint problems with homeopathy?
(TMJ diseases and disorders refer to a complex and poorly understood set of conditions, manifested by pain in the area of the jaw and associated muscles and limitations in the ability to make the normal movements of speech, facial expression, eating, chewing, and swallowing)

It happens in this patient when she forgets to wear her teeth guard - because she has not had the problem for a while- which she wears because she grinds her teeth at night. She gets the following symptoms
a.. facial pain
a.. pain in the jaw joint and surrounding tissues, including the ear
a.. jaw locking

Thanks
Rochelle

Long before I knew much about homeopathy I was diagnosed with TMJ and given a 'guard' to wear at night. I finally learned the 'specialist' was inappropriately using this diagnosis to accumulate travel funds (yup - he skipped to the islands). Much later, a proper dentist adjusted my bite with a series of grindings. That eliminated the mandibular problems but did nothing for the supposedly associated migraines. That was later handled by homeopathy. If there is a structural problem - it should be addressed first - by an experienced dental professional. Then re-take the homeopathic portion of the case - you may find the symptoms change.

Rochelle,

I am always open to learn that remedies help cure mechanical dysfunctions
such as TMJ. So, I will stay VERY alert to the responses from our learned
colleagues on the list.

At the same time, given that TMJ is a mechanical dysfunction, it is possible
to correct the situation via external help (by some professional such as an
osteopath or cranial/sacral practitioner), or by re-educating the muscle
structures in the face/jaw.

One such system of re-education is the Moshe Feldenkrais system. I have
used his techniques many times with extremely good, fast and lasting
results.

Here is a URL that will give you some more information as well as a set of
tapes to purchase that can be used for self-help.

I hope this helps,

TMJ - Caranio-sacral therapy or cranial osteopathy is the best frontline treatment to correct a mechanical mis-alignment - then the appropriate hoepathic remedy to aid the muscles and tendons to heal. If it's good enough for Jeremy Scherr it's good enough for me!

I don't know how this group feels about combinations and sarcodes (not being
true homeopathy), but organotherapeutically with a sarcode of TMJ, or the
Mediral product TMJ Med (complex homeo), have both shown some substantial
results.

I don't want to go the specific remedy route as that is not the way I
practice. You have to be asking which came first the jaw pain or the reasons
for the jaw pain. Yes, there might be a mechanical problem causing the pain
but teeth grinding is indicative of many distressing underlying causes,
especially if it happens at night, when asleep, when the individual is in a
free expressive state. Just think about the whole notion of 'gritting the
teeth.

There are rubrics for TMJ if you want to go that specific route.

Are there specific remedies? I did treat this woman a while back but the
problems she had then were cured with a constitutional Rx.

Hi,

Yes, with the correct remedies, over time, even a dislocated jaw can
'heal' - from experience, even one that has been dislocated by a blow to the face,
with severe locking, clicking and popping in the ear on chewing/yawning.

Not impossible. Even with bruxism. Dentists always swear it needs
corrective guards, etc. Not my experience FWIW.

Thanks for all the replies. Very useful. In fact I did recommend that she sees my osteopath who is also a cranial sacral practitioner. I spoke to the osteopath tonight and she said that she could give the young woman exercises and stretches to do.

Rochelle

here is the result of a brief search in EH - have not checked for relevance
however, but merely an idea for a search you could do in your programme,
which may bring up some other rems for consideration.

EH - tmj

adam. insig-m. caust. lac-e. musca-d.

EH - mandibular joint

bell-p. croc. dulc. lach. musca-d. nit-ac. ruth-met. thlas.
when you combine the above with the rubric offered by Cinnabar you get

FACE - PAIN - Jaw - Articulation, tmj, mand.joint

acet-ac. adam. agar. alum. alumn. am-m. ang. Arum-t. asaf. asar. Bapt.
bell-p. brom. calc. Caust. cimic. cist. cor-r. dream-p. dendr-pol. croc.
dros. dulc. fl-ac. glon. insig-m. glon. hydrog. hyper. lac-e. musca-d. lach.
laur. mang. nat-c. nicc. nit-ac. pin-con. nit-ac. op. psil. Rhus-t.
ruth-met. sphing. spig. spong. Stry. sul-ac. thlas. til. tung-met. verb.
vesp. xan.
