help or ideas needed please

Post by Marleen »

I had a dog in (of a friend) today who i thought had a sprain so i gave ruta but after a few hours it seem to do nothing, just oposite,

the owner noticed that this morning the dog had trouble in rolling from one side to an other, and to get up, but he managed still after some
seconds trying;;; i took the case and dicided ruta was in order, but it gets worse and worse

now he can only get up after minutes of wriggling trying to get his legs under him to lift them, then gets really stressed if he does
not succeed, begins to pant heavy from working to get up, no sound so i think no pain

if he finely succeed to stand he can walk but tottering, i can not make out witch leg i think both but right worse

he can pee and poop so not parelises right? ans still it now has all the signs of parelysis;;

i do not want to hop from remedy to remedy so i ask first, was i wrong with the ruta?

any thoughts ideas please?

Marleen

Does it look like a pinched nerve? or possibly stroke?
I have seen this 'struggling to get his legs under him' in a small older dog with no apparent pain. I remember reading up on hypericum but wound up with another remedy due to his having prostate problems at the time.
Has anyone used cell salts with dogs? something like this would sound like mag phos. Worth reading up on.

Hi Donna,

if it was a pinched nerve he would scream trying to get up right? he does
not make a sound
no stroke no i know those signs seen them in other dog, im sure its no
stroke;;
i thought about paralyse but then he would not be able to stand in the end
and walk although difficult once he gets up he
can walk to end of garden and back

i read them all the indicated remedies like hyp arn rhus nux but im not
sure, and do not want to hop from one to
an other, still i think i need to do something before he will not be able to
stand at all anymore

its the no cry from pain that baffle me... thats seems to give impression of
paralyse but then why he manage after a few minutes and walk thats what
makes me confused

I have seen a pinched nerve react more like a nerve pathway shut down - rather than a pain causing event. Much the same feeling as when your hand or foot 'goes to sleep' when the placement is wrong. Leaves a tingle sensation after the fact, but not pain. Just a thought.

Hi Marleen,

Have a look at Alumina.

Chris.

Marleen,

I think the best thing is to find a vet or other practitioner who can
determine whether this is musculoskeletal or neurological and if
neurological whether peripheral or central (vertigo for example). That
determination will help a lot. While animals cannot speak, there is a bit of
information one can find out by examination.

good luck

Marleen,

You were't "wrong" to start with Ruta, but now that it's clear that remedy
isn't working it's time to move on.

Can you have the dog evaluated by a chiropractor? Even one that treats only
people would be able to evaluate if you're dealing with some kind of spinal
cord injury. If the dog does develop problems pooping or peeing, the remedy
is clearly Causticum -- and you have to treat aggressively (200c, three
pellets hourly for a total of six doses a day; continue for three days).

Hypericum would be another remedy to consider. You can try giving the dog
200c, 3 pellets every ten minutes for a total of six doses. If he responds,
reduce the dosage the next day to 3 pellets hourly for six doses.

As far as other possible remedies go, we need to know more about how this
developed -- did the dog injury himself, or has this been coming on slowly?
What section of the spine is most affected? Is there any local tenderness
or swelling?

Hope this helps.

Peace,
Cinnabar

Spondylolisthesis is a fracture of a 'wing' (pars interarticulariar) of a
lower verterbrae usu L 4 or 5 thus you have bone (not nerve) damage.

I thought it was one vertebrae slipping forward on another maybe due to
fracture of wing but this could cause pressure on nerve root. Just
done a google search Jeasn

Hi Cinnabar,

Why treath agressivly? 200c hourly or 6 times a day is a huge dose,

i never give more then 1 pellet of 200 and then wait.

The remedies you named yes i all concidered and read up on them at one point
or an other
in taking the case

for now i just sit and wait see what happens after a week or less hopefully
on pred
