Hahnemann letter: a tidbit

Post by Gaby Rottler »

Dear all,

in a letter to Stapf (Hahnemann calls him: "Estimated friend, ...") from
January 24, 1812, Hahnemann talks among other things about the fever
during autumn and winter which clearly differed from previous years and
therefore needed different prescriptions.

Sometimes Arsenicum needed to be used in the following conditions:

"an everlasting thirst, where the patient only wets his lips and can't
drink much, with cold hands and feet, where he overestimates his
strength and dares to rise, but nevertheless sinks to the ground, where
he always wants to go from one bed to the other and is beside himself
with anxiety, especially abou the 3rd hour of the night - where he sees
persons and stories before his eyes on closing them and otherwise, which
yet are not horrible or anxious, but not present, where he is
fainthearted, whiny, timid and is afraid of death - where suddenly he is
attacked by suffocating spells, especially in the evening when lying,
with or without cough - or where he has often to fight nausea and
queasiness - there a globule moistened with the diluted solution
enclosed (1 decilliontel) will surely do wonders."

This is a really vivid description of some of the characteristic
features of Arsenicum from Hahnemann's pen. I'm currently browsing
through some of his letters, which sometimes are full of wits,
expressions of his warm-heartedness towards his friends, e.g where he
congratulates Stapf with the warmest words for the birth of Stapf's
daughter, hints for remedies, posology [in a letter to Schreter he
writes in 1829: "Is the Lyopdium well prepared, so please give never, if
I may ask, 3 poppy-seed size globules (do you have such fine ones?) but
only ./X or at most ../X". My comment: only 1 or 2 globs. of the 30C]
and provings and much more.

I'll share some for it from time to time with the list.
Best,

Gaby
