Under what circumstances do you think the rubric MIND - MENTAL SYMPTOMS
should be used?

Hi Soroush,

What rep is that in (and how many remedies)? Mine has only "mental symptoms
alternating with...".

The only time I (rightly or wrongly) use such a general rubric is when I'm
"scraping the bottom of the barrel", looking for little remedies I'm not
familiar with that might apply. (Not my most successful method so far,
LOL!)

The corollary of Hering's law is that the highest, innermost, and more important "organs" begin the cure. Also, we know that the generals are far more important than the specifics. Thus a mental general is usually, in my experience, far more important than a physical specific (or even a mental specific). I'm sure you're had those patients who just don't quite fit any general category. You can't simply say "depressed," or "Anxious," or "nuttier than a fruitcake" and actually have them. Something it's there, but then the je ne se qua is what you must consider but just can't place. In those instances the generals are the greatest not only for remedy selection, but also for the final choice between numerous close candidates. My exception then is that the generals are how you evoke the deeper healing powers of the elan vitae. At least, that has been my experience.

Hi Tom,

I definitely use mental symptoms, but Soroush's question was, "Under what
circumstances do you think the [by which I assume that he meant a single
rubric, stating this and nothing more] rubric MIND - MENTAL SYMPTOMS should
be used?" My rep does not contain this particular rubric, so maybe I
misunderstood.

I checked at least three of my repertories and didn't find that rubric either. What I was driving at was that since "Mind -- Mental Symptoms" is so imperceptive, it is general. Ask my grandkids, who cut to the point and they'd say, "He's weird." My late wife the brilliant psychologist/homeopath, once had the occasion to give me her diagnosis of a woman we knew in Park City, Utah. The woman exhibited traits from paranoid to aggressive; bi-polar (manic) depression; severe anxiety alternating with borderline personality behavior. A longer list ensued. I asked my wife, who listed carefully to all the symptoms to please provide a succinct diagnosis. She said, "Looney-tunes."
Couldn't find that in the reparatory either. But definitely "Mental symptoms" would have been a good general rubric for that patient.
It's good to exchange views with other practitioners. I hope you and yours have a happy and sacred Christmas and that you and all our brothers and sisters in this wonderful art are blessed and increased in 2005 and beyond.
