Dear Patti,
I am not an expert on honey, except from its use on my patients and what I
know from readings.
My place is full of green and jungle & mountains are near by to every one
(means within 50-100 KMs, but the area of jungle is getting shorter quickly
thanx to human development!). So most probably every one have some pure raw
jungle honey with them. It is obtained by getting the combs from natural
surroundings and expressing the honey by straining. There are also keepers
who cultivate it. Some heavily commercialised producers are also here who
feed jaggery (cane sugar by product) dissolved in water to the bees. Mainly
two types of honey is available here. We call it 'small honey' and 'large
honey'. May be with the size of the bees (I think so) and I don't know their
technical/scientific names. Small honey is a medicine in itself according to
indigenous medicine. But it is getting rarer now and is costly. I suppose it
is not cultivable.
Honey is used for many purposes here. It is an ingredient of many Ayurvedic
(indigenous Indian medicine) prescriptions also.
Another thing is honey mixed with plain water taken in empty stomach in the
morning is used here for controlling obesity. And it works too. One table
spoon dissolved in one glass of drinking water.
The surprising thing is that here any bitter tasting medicine is given to
"infants" mixed with honey. Me too always recommend honey especially to
babies (more than 6 months old) for stomatitis from fever and from use of
antibiotic/antipyretic/analgesic. It get healed quick. So this Botunlinum
thing confuses me?.
Now what is this Manuka honey?
Best Regards,
Dr. Abdul Gafar.
