Hi,
I am desperate for help.....
I have a dog (spayed female 9 yrs old) who has been plagued with
bowel incontinence for two years now. Tests cannot determine an
obvious cause. It isn't "involuntary" as such because she knows it's
coming and squats, just as she normally would. It seems to be more
of an "urgency" issue. As if there is not enough time between the
urge to go and to get outside, so she just squats where she is.
The stool is always formed and appears normal. She has always, from
puppyhood, suffered with digestive problems. Three years ago she
bloated and torsioned, requiring surgery. Her tummy is constantly
gurgling and rumbling with gas, and she always belches immediately
after eating.
She also has a tendency to form bladder stones (calcium). She has
had urinary incontinence for the last 10 months. Last May we
discovered stones in the bladder on x-ray and she underwent surgery
to remove them. The urinary incontinence stopped for a couple of
months but has slowly returned again. A recent x-ray has indicated
more stones are being formed possibly.
The urine incontinence appears in much the same way as the bowel
incontinence....an "urgency" issue rather than "involuntary". The
urine appears a medium yellow, cloudy, no sediment. There isn't any
sort of strong odor. In fact it hardly smells at all, maybe a very
faint woody smell. She urinates quite frequently and a normal amount.
When I discovered she was re-forming stones again I put her on a
daily dose of Berberis 6C (has been about 2 weeks now). I haven't
seen her pass anything and her incontinence remains the same (some
days much worse than others).
She's a very sensitive dog, looking horrified everytime she has an
accident and then tip-toeing away and out of sight.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm really at my
witts end....
Kris
Another dog case
Re: Another dog case
Hi Kris,
I'm still learning myself and all my five dogs are under
homeopathic care. Some with great some success and others not as much.
I would suggest to check out the yahoo groups. I'm sure you can get
help there.
ClassicalHomeopathyPets
Of course I also would suggest a raw food species appropriate diet
and no vaccines to start out with.
Good luck Christa www.hovawarts.com

Another dog case
Kris, I'd say she has a pretty heavy load of chronic disease: the
dietary and incontinence problems are common. If you'd like, step over
to our teaching list and we can qualify her case a bit further and
offer a list of really great animal homeopaths from which you can
choose one who will help. It's a complex matter, and 6c of anything
isn't going to make a dent, I think.

Re: Another dog case
I would consider putting her on a very easy to digest food, as natural and
as organic as possible. I would also consider one of the Lac remedies,
especially Lac Caninum and Lac Equis. Other possibilities are Calc, Calc
Renalis and Sepia. Last but not least is Equisetum of which Murphy writes:
"Equis. relieved loss of control over bladder and rectum in a case of
general paralysis."
Equisetum is horsetail and can figuratively and symbolically (and literally
if one dares to use his imagination) be seen to be related to Lac Equis
which is horse's milk. Lac Equis has issues with embarrassment, making
mistakes and involuntary urination and stool as well as disordered stomach.
Most, and more likely all, of the Lac remedies would have stomach issues.

Re: Another dog case
Hi, (I posted this previously but haven't seen it come up. My apologies if it appears twice).
I am desperate for some help.....
I have a 9 year old spayed female who has suffered from bowel incontenence for about 2 years now. Tests have not revealed any obvious cause. It's not what I would consider an "involuntary" process, because she squats as normal (it's not falling out unnoticed behind her) but rather it seems like more of an "urgency" issue. As if the urge is immediately followed by the function, without time to make it outside.
The stool is formed and normal. It's very sporadic, but frequent. Can happen once, twice, or three times a day or she go accident free for a day (happens day and night).
She's always had digestive problems, since puppyhood. Three years ago she bloated and torsioned, requiring surgery. Her tummy is always gurgling and rumbling with gas, and she always belches after she eats.
She also has a tendency to form bladder stones (calcium). She suffered with bladder incontinence about 10 months ago and x-rays revealed stones. She underwent surgery in May to remove them. Her urinary incontinence stopped for a couple of months but then slowly resurfaced. A recent x-ray is indicating more stones are forming.
I have had her on a daily dose of Berberis 6C for about 2 weeks now. Her urine is medium yellow, very cloudy, but no visible sediment. It is practically odorless (maybe a very faint woody smell). Her urinary incontinence appears in much the same way as the bowel incontence, as an urgency issue. She urinates frequently 6 -10 times a day, normal amounts.
She's a very sensitive dog and appears horrified (embarrassed) when she has an accident, and will tip-toe away out of sight.
I'm really feeling at my witts-end and would greatly appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Re: Another dog case
Thanks Christa. She has been on a natural raw food diet since she was 9 months of age, and she hasn't been vaccinated since she was a year old.
I've tried to do everything right, but I really feel she is very weak constitutionally.

Re: Another dog case
Thank you so much Allen! I will take a look at all those you've mentioned. Equisetum sounds particularly interesting.
As for diet....she has been on a natural raw diet since the age of 9 months. I can't afford organic meat, but she does get organic veggies.
Thank you again,
Kris
