Polio

Post by Rochelle »

I too had Polio when I was 7 and was hospitalised isolated for a month flat
on my back. (Goodness knows why as when no one was around I used to jump up
and down on the bed!!) There was an epidemic in my town. My sister and I
were not vaccinated against anything. My sister had a high fever for 24
hours and my parents always thought that this was her version of polio. With
me, I had the mild flu and then found I couldn't walk properly. Others in
the town were more seriously affected - I wonder if they had been
vaccinated. I am going back now to 1957 ish.

Hi Richard,

I recall reading somewhere that *usually* a person infected with the polio
virus experiences nothing other than a mild cold. For it to develop into
*paralytic* polio requires the virus getting access to the spinal column
which (I read) only happens if the patient's immunity is weak. So those
other kids may well have "gotten it", but only in its more common, trivial
form.

Best,
Shannon
