Private Goitre

Dear Atiq

My goitre patient was getting on fine painting the iodine on but when she put it on cotton wool and attached it in place she fell asleep and woke with 2 nasty burns either side of her neck. Unfortunately she didn't contact me until a few days later. I have given her some Causticum 30 to take for 3 days.
Now this goitre is growing fast!!!! Today she had a scan and it shows no nodules or cysts , just enlargement which is consistent with hypothyroid. She is now feeling it when she swallows which she is getting frightened about. Spongia has thyroid with constriction and painful on swallowing and it is in Dr Ramakrishnan's Cancer book for Cancer of the thyroid. She also had a biopsy today but in normal UK fashion it will take weeks to get the results. The Sepia 300 I gave her has done nothing except make her tired. The metal and emotions in Herings MM seem to fit her quite well. What do you reckon if you have had experience of this problem?

In case anyone read the post marked private - the patient's burns
have now healed up (I was away for the weekend so the accidentally
post has only just been sent!!) and her energy has returned with the
Causticum. Causticum came up quite high in her rep!! I still may
proceed to Spongia. This is a fast moving case which needs to be
dealt with aggressively to bring down this goitre.

I am glad the Causticum seemed to work but just because a
remedy 'reps out high' doesn't mean it is the simillimum - even if
causticum reps out high, causticum will only cure if the case fits
causticum and this goes for all remedies. This is such a
fundamental error in trying to select the simillimum, which might
turn out to be the remedy that 'repped out lowest'.

Same with Spongia, does it fit the case?

Can I ask what you mean by 'deal with aggressively'?

Dear Rochelle,

Please note that I wrote earlier (last month sometime) on Minutus that there is possible danger in overdosing on material doses of Iodine. It can drive a hypothryoid to being more hypo. You can be aggravating (in allopathic as much as homeopathic sense) the problem.

Spongia is a good choice.

(ps ,I don't have the copy now, you could look it up in the minutus archives online)

Dear Joy,


This is a throw back from Dr Ramakrisnan's post grad course I have just finished. He believes in and has had success with prescribing more frequently then we are used to doing. e.g. his split dose is 200C qd. I have been experimenting with this and have not found it a problem. In an acute he will give 10 doses a day for 3 days.
