I'm working on getting ready for publication a translation of the 5th
edition that was done by Bernhardt Fincke in 1890. I'm working from a
transcription of the original manuscript that was done for me.
Right now the work means going over the transcription, comparing it
to the manuscript when it looks like something was not quite
transcribed correctly, and comparing it to the Dudgeon 5th as a
further check.
The structure of it is a bit strange... it is really a first draft
that needed further editing to make it readable-- lots of convoluted
sentences with lack of punctuation, etc.
And since I want to publish it as a transcription, I'm not making any
editing changes.

But what it means is that I have to read the whole thing. And when I
got up to Paragraph 280, I was really struck by the footnote. The
Dudgeon version says the same thing, but not quite in the same words.
Since Para. 280 was totally re-written for the 6th edition, this
footnote disappeared-- which is a real loss.

Here it is. Read it and take it in.

If the Allopath, trying the homeopathic healing method, thinks he can
not resolve upon such small and so deeply attenuated doses, he may
ask himself what he would risk by it? Should the unbelief, estimating
the ponderable only for real, and the imponderable for nothing, be
right, nothing worse could follow upon a dose seeming to him as
nothing, than that no action at all would take effect - therefore
still something much more innocent, than, what must follow his so
large doses of Allopathic medicine. Why should he deem his
inexperience coupled with prejudices more competent, than the
experience of many years proven by fact?

And... 180 years after it was written, can we ask for more?
