DMSO and Maggots

Post by Janice Hughlett »

Hello Jennifer,

Thank you for your tip on maggots.

In your experience, do you think DMSO would be capable of driving maggots out of orifaces? Wildlife rehabilitators regularly get in animals with maggots in rectum, eyes, ears, throat, nostrils. I've had reports of people using Advantage flea preparation in desperation, but it would be nice to know of a safe alternative.

Did you use the salve directly on the wound? Do you think it would be absorbed into the body enough to drive them from everywhere?

What about infant animals? Do you think there would be a harm in using this in eyes-closed infants?

Thank you !

Kind regards,

Hi Janice,

As I am not a vet, someone else may be more qualified than I. I am only going from experience with several puppies that had been bitten by blowflies, and had maggots in the brain, & ear canal. They were only a week old, and still had their eyes closed. I have the entire story posted at: http://www.industryinet.com/~ruby/sick_pup_saga.html .

This was the only thing that I muscle tested to actually cause them to move out. I used a liquid, but there is a gel that stays more in the area you want it, if a liquid may "get away from you" into a place where it may be dangerous.

Take a look at my Puppy article, and I think you may find answers you are looking for.

Saw a video case of a breast ulcer with maggots - treatment was Psorinum 200 1 or maybe 2 doses, and the maggots voluntarily vacated - then the ulcer was treated. Apparently, picking the maggots out with tweezers, if there is ulceration, can be injurious and so this method is employed - well, in India it is!

Robyn,

After using the DMSO, we "helped" them out with a Q-tip... It worked well and was gentle.

A fascinating read! Did you apply the DMSO simply by drizzling the liquid
onto the sore? And I suppose that made the maggots leave because if its
ability to penetrate the body so effectively? (I recall reading that when
you've rubbed DMSO onto hands or etc., e.g. for arthritis, you start to
sweat the smell of garlic -- in other words, it really gets in there! Which
would have made me assume that it would mess up remedy action pretty
thoroughly, but maybe not...)

Shannon,

I just dropped some into the wound with an eye dropper. It really cleaned house. They didn't want to be in there!

Yes, it absorbs very quickly.

I don't use much when using it with Aloe. Just a bit, to help absorb.

I've used it with John Christopher's Bone Flesh and Cartilage, on the upper back, arms and wrists, to help with Carpal Tunnel pain. I've seen it recently used in conjunction with oral remedy- with dry pellets in helping to clear instantly a Migraine headache caused by a Bacterial Meningitis infection. Although the infection takes longer to clear out; the headache was instantly gone with the remedy used topically....

I don't find that it compromises the remedy. I have seen that it helps the remedy to work deeply~ quickly.

This is just my experience and observation.
