Demodectic Mange-personality/symptoms

Post by Ondra »

Thank you, I will appreciate your input. Here is the history and
current symptoms.
ONDRA'S HISTORY – through 10/03

8 year old German Shepherd, female, spayed.
Temperament is sweet, stable, calm, accepting
Medical History: all vaccines given yearly until 3 years ago, titer
testing used now, except for rabies (last given March of 2002), which
is mandatory.
--8 weeks old--bladder/urinary tract infection--antibiotic treatment
--3 mos. old---ate rocks--emergency treatment--antibiotic treatment
--6 mos. old---neuter surgery/no known problems---antibiotics
treatment post-operative
--9 mos. old---first ear infection---antibiotic treatment/steroid
(prednisone)
--12 mos. old/on--ear infections become continuous/chronic---ongoing
antibiotic/steroid treatment for first five years of life.

From five years on, owner began exploring alternative medicine on
vet's recommendation. After allergy testing, skin scrapings, etc.,
vet could find no known cause and suggested she could do nothing
further for the dog. This was the second vet, visited for second
opinion after all treatments by initial vet had failed, leading to
decline in health.

Currently being fed a raw diet of mostly meat/bones. Previously, the
diet consisted of mostly vegetables/rice/some meat. No change in
skin condition from diet changes was noted.

"Natural" ear cleaner used at five years, no further ear infections,
however problem moved then to foot chewing, hot spots and now to
complete breakdown in skin condition, with all indications of
demodectic mange and a secondary infection, causing terrible odor of
a sick/sweet nature. There is crusting, oozing, bleeding, hair loss,
deep ulceration.

After last rabies injection in spring of 2002, the dog also became
lame on the right hind leg. There is great muscle atrophy, but dog
is still "playful", but prefers to sleep and compulsively lick and
chew skin.
