I bit my tongue and fingers for a while, but cannot hold back any more.
I am going to take issue about what our colleague Atiq has written about
these two points.
In both cases he has come up with certain medicines/remedies.
In both cases I would regard the situation as a chronic problem in the main.
My teachers have taught me that I should individualise in every case and
prescribe on the totality of the symptoms of the disease.
It may be that the hair loss has brought the patient to me, but that may not
be the root of the problem (pls excuse the pun).
So I should be grateful if Atiq would kindly advise under what circumstances
I should forget my teachers' teachings and follow his recommendation of
perhaps a 'specific' if such a remedy exists for these conditions.

hi , i'm new here. just to through my 2 cents in. what you are describing is
a constitutional remedy. albeit a wise thing to do. however, i believe that
times have changed and patients want quicker results. therefore, i believe it is
sound based on that to prescribe for a specific problem. i know that this is
against traditional teachings. however, this is a different world.

Soroush - I do not believe there is any specific presenting for this type of
case and I would generally never prescribe any remedy unless the symptoms of
the patient matched the picture of the remedy. I do believe, however, that
Ustilago may be a "sleeper" remedy of sorts owing to the huge amount of
reproductive organ problems in today's world. These disorders manifest
themselves outwardly in a rampant and obsessive sexuality, a huge and
growing epidemic of STD's to include AIDS, herpes and many others and the
upheaval in traditional sex roles and relationships between men and women.
It is the end of the Piscean Age and many are prepared to go forward into
the Aquarian Age but, for those who are not, (symbolic) disease of these
types as well as others may present itself as the catalyst to awaken
humanity to the approaching transition. I would keep Ustilago in mind
whenever components of sexuality and sex organ pathology to include
menopause and hair, skin and nail dysfunction occur.

You are correct of course. As this is an extremely beneficial mailing group I thought I would just give my input. There was no intention of causing any of my colleagues any vexation on my method of prescriptions.
All I can say is that it works for me.......
Perhaps I will go back to being a silent listener in case my views offend.
Teachers are here to teach us, but one can only become better by specialising in his or her own way of prescribing. That's one of the beauties of Homoeopathy, it allows for individuals to be different in prescription methods.
And who's to say it doesn't work?
I did state that one should prescribe constitutionally first then follow with specifics...
Anyhows, back to being a quite listener

Hi Atiq,
I for one hope you won't stop sharing your thoughts and experience. I was
trained similarly to Soroush, and therefore naturally agree with what both
you and he have said, that constitutional prescribing is the best place to
start, but sometimes this isn't feasible, and other times it may be
effective for everything *except* the specific complaint -- and in that
situation, Hahnemann himself gives "permission" to use specific treatment.
(Sorry I can't supply the aphorism, or the specific wording -- can anyone?)
My worry in treating single symptoms (e.g. "hair loss" as an entity, without
regard to causation or constitution) would be that there could be a cost,
aka suppression resulting, but if the action of the remedy is sufficiently
circumscribed (sufficiently "specific", that is!), then maybe this isn't a
concern.
In any case I find it interesting to hear the different approaches, and the
discussion that follows on them!
Cheers to all,
Shannon
