Off topic ?? - Milk/BGH & Cancer

Post by Soroush Ebrahimi »

Dear Colleagues

Further to the question regarding links between BGH and cancers, a lady at
the milk company I spoke to yesterday, rang today to advise that I should
look up work done at Michigan State Uni. From there I got the name of Prof
Epstein. Here are the results of the short search I did.

I must add that BGH is banned in Europe and Canada.
But we should be aware.

Monsanto's Hormonal Milk Poses Risks of Prostate Cancer, Besides Other

As reported in a May 9 article in The Lancet, women with a relatively small
increase in blood levels of the naturally occurring growth hormone
Insulin-like Growth Factor I (IGF-1) are up to seven times more likely to
develop premenopausal breast cancer than women with lower levels. Based on
those results, the report concluded that the risks of elevated IGF-1 blood
levels are among the leading known risk factors for breast cancer, and are
exceeded only by a strong family history or unusual mammographic
abnormalities. Apart from breast cancer, an accompanying editorial warned
that elevated IGF-1 levels are also associated with greater than any known
risk factors for other major cancers, particularly colon and prostate.

This is similar to what happened with Aspartame! From

The Uncontrolled rBGH Experiment on America
By Karen Hudson
Bovine Growth Hormone (BGH; also known as recombinant bovine growth hormone,
rBGH, recombinant bovine somatotrophin or rBST) is a genetically engineered
hormone injected into cows to artificially force increased milk production.
Approximately 30% of cows in the United States are injected with this
controversial product.
After years of heated debate and controversy, the FDA gave agribiz giant
Monsanto approval to market the rBGH product under the name Posilac. The
drug went onto the market in 1994. Monsanto spent a billion dollars
developing this drug and the public has been the victim of an a
no-holds-barred effort to force this product into the marketplace with
virtually no input from concerned consumers. In addition, taxpayers demand
to know why this drug is forced onto the market to produce more milk when
the excess supply of milk in the US causes the government to purchase
upwards of $200 million a year to purchase surplus milk.
The approval process for rBGH was littered with suspected collusions between
Monsanto and the FDA. There was a revolving door atmosphere during this
process between regulators and promoters of this product. For example,
Michael Taylor, a major force in gaining approval for the use of rBGH, moved
between positions at the FDA and the law offices for Monsanto. He is
currently the head of Monsanto's Washington DC office.
Margaret Miller, a former chemist and dairy specialist with Monsanto, is now
settled in at the FDA. She was instrumental in increasing the amount of
antibiotic residues allowed in milk from 1 part per 100 million to 1 part
per million as soon as she left Monsanto and assumed her post at the FDA.

I thank God that the powers that be did not succumb to pressure from USA and
banned it from Europe.
