The tincture is prepared from the fresh leaves and the bark of a very
poisonous plant growing luxuriantly in Cuba and the southern parts of the U.
S.A. It is called "Guso" by the natives of the West Indies. It belongs to
the natural order of Anacardicae. The plant is so very poisonous that
sleeping beneath its shade causes fatal illness, especially when the sun is
shining on it.
It produces and therefore cures vesicular eruptions, malignant pustules
and ulcers. The ulcers are deep with hard edges, the surrounding skins being
covered with small shining scales. They discharge a thick, purulentum, fetid
matter.
It is a good remedy for erysipelas of a severe type and malignant
nature. Great swelling, intense itching, and much sloughing are some of the
characteristics of this remedy. We use it in erysipelas involving the
tissues around the eyes. The face gets most dreadfully swollen, and the eyes
seem to project far out of their sockets. They feel enormously enlarged, as
if they are too big for the sockets. This sensation of enlargement leads to
its application even in glaucoma. On similar symptoms it has been prescribed
in ciliary neuralgia, the result of asthenopia and chronic iritis. There is
profuse lachrymation and aggravation of pain from movement. Another symptom
worth remembering, is that the pain is always worse when near a warm stove;
open air relieves.
Its miraculous antidotal functions in malignant pustules and
ulcerations have been proved repeatedly. Dr. Navarro reports of having cured
an indolent ulcer of six year's standing on the lower third of right leg,
near external malleolus.. He also used it successfully in a case of
sloughing of the right breast. The leading symptoms were, the hardness along
the edges of the ulcer, discharge of thick purulent foetid greenish yellow
matter, the peculiar decayed-meat appearance, and the presence of shining
scales covering the integument in the neighbourhood of the ulcers.
This remedy is better from motion.
