smallpox

can the smallpox vaccine currently being proposed to be used on emergency
personnel in USA cause smallpox? [obviously it can cause buckets of other
bad stuff but can anyone state with scientific objectivity one way or the
other if it can cause the disease itself?]

i have not read that it causes smallpox in the person receiving the vaccine, but it is contagious to others
and can create smallpox. i understand that is the main reason for discontinuing vaccination in 1972.

my favorite is the way the Russians used 1 infected child in an orphanage to confer vaccination to other children
for almost the entire 19c.

DECEMBER 17. The public does not realize that medical conferences
are held almost every day of the year, somewhere in this world, and
that at these conferences there are mainstream professionals who,

Such a conference---on the smallpox situation--- was held in Atlanta on June
19 and 20 of 2002. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices heard a
number of speakers, one of which was Dr. Tom Mack of USC, who said about
himself:

"My credentials include probably spending more time working up [analyses of]
population-based outbreaks of smallpox than virtually anybody ever has."

There must have been some way they gave "controlled doses" to avoid simply
spreading the epidemic?

i dont have any information on the details, but i have the same questions. the point though is that
the smallpox vaccine conveys sufficient infection. i'll see if i can find any more info on this.

As Russell said, the smallpox vaccine is prepared from the vaccinia
virus, not the smallpox virus, so it cannot cause smallpox. Here's a
quote from the CDC website:

Facts about vaccinia

* The vaccinia virus, the virus in the smallpox vaccine, is another
"pox"-type virus.
* Vaccinia is related to smallpox, but milder.
* The vaccinia virus may cause rash, fever, and head and body aches.
In certain groups of people, complications from the vaccinia virus
can be severe.
* Vaccinia is spread by touching a vaccination site before it has
healed or by touching bandages or clothing that have been
contaminated with live virus from the smallpox vaccination site.
* This way, vaccinia can spread to other parts of the body or to
other individuals. This is called inadvertent inoculation.
* In the past, spreading to other parts of the vaccine recipients'
body was the more common form of inadvertent inoculation.
* Careful care must be taken of the site of the vaccine to prevent
spreading of the vaccinia virus.
