joy's case

Post by Joy Lucas »

Thanks to all who worked on the case and well done to Jean and Andy who
chose Hamamelis - this was the correct remedy.

This was an old case of mine and a real learning curve as far as
repertorisation and the use of Materia Medicas.

I could have written the case up with more directions as to rubrics but I
wanted to share the case as I saw it then and not in hindsight, so to speak.

I originally gave her Phosphorus which did nothing at all and I had no good
plan as to how to go about re analysing the case as I was so convinced of
Phos.

So instead of repertorising again I selected a large number of haemorrhagic
remedies and set about studying them. I only had a few books then but as I
was reading Phatak on Hamamelis he says "wants the respect due to me shown"
- and I thought "that's it" - that is exactly how she was during the times
she felt depressed and at her worst. And of course the more I read the more
I realised that this was her remedy.

But then I thought - how do I go back and repertorise this? What rubrics to
choose that I hadn't found before. Well this wasn't so easy either.
Certainly the remedy was to be found in Haughty (and of course the main
physical rubrics) but how to find this aspect of wanting respect.

I went round the houses quite a bit using DELUSION NOT APPRECIATED, +
LONGING FOR THE GOOD OPINION OF OTHERS + many of the self confidence
rubrics, finally finding it in REVERENCE (she gives it and wants it back)
and also now OPINIONS, EXPECTS OTHERS TO PAY RESPECT TO HERS.

I think Hamamelis is a really important female remedy and worth studying in
greater detail and I would suggest adding it to other rubrics to give it the
prominence due.

Hope this was useful to you and thanks again Andy to your detailed
contribution.

Best wishes, Joy

JOY CASE PRESENTED:
Subject:
[Minutus] a case

I think this is an interesting case (taken approx. one year ago) - if
anyone
would like to work out the remedy.

CASE

Male, 29, average height, quite over weight for height, fair, early hair

loss. Presently not working but family is wealthy and he is not sure
about
working in family business - taking his time to decide. Comes across as
very
intelligent, somewhat superior attitude which melted a bit during case
taking. Likes to 'use' language, flamboyant use of words when really not

necessary. Dressed in much the same manner (shirt with little flowers
on)
and an unusual green suit.

Presenting complaint - "My life is falling apart" + diarrhoea

diarrhoea can come on at any time
at least 2-3 times a day (never night time)
sometimes has a bit of blood in stool, otherwise just loose, soft,
normal
colour
anus itches after stool (possible bleeding haemorrhoids inside)
some pain in abdomen before stool but not always
pain is anxious, tight, pulling (used many other non-repertorisable
words)
doesn't seem to be > by any food or drink
craves still water or watered down fruit juice
no strong food cravings or aversions
very little else to tell me about diarrhoea

his life is falling apart because he has lost his girl friend of 3
years.

a year previous they were on a ski trip together - he had a bad accident
and
broke bones in 3 places in right leg and right wrist - he was treated
well
in a local hospital with follow ups in UK. Healing took time but he was
given the all clear but the pain continued.

pain not only in leg but also in the back - aches, sometimes tingling,
cannot sit for long periods of time, pain seems to stick to one place
i.e.
doesn't move around or radiate, > warmth.

relationship with partner was intense, passionate, sexual - he was very
much
in love - she abandoned him when he was in hospital, gone off with
someone
else - it was so sudden and unbelievable to him that it should happen,
that
she should leave him - no warning.

since then everything has been falling apart - doesn't know what to do
with
his life, cannot make decisions, cannot bring it all together, doesn't
know
what direction to go in, feels pulled in many directions, father wants
him
to work with him (furniture business), is getting angry with son for not

getting his act together, his friends keep telling him the same thing
"pull
yourself together"

has many academic qualifications but doesn't know what to do with them
feels that he is all over the place but not achieving anything - he is
just
sitting around "navel gazing" but then gets agitated with all this

had periods of very itchy skin as a teenager, especially in summer,
"felt as
though I had been tickled with bristles" - scratched a lot but no
eruption,
disappeared of its own accord.

rather difficult to get more from him

Hope you find this of interest. I will write the follow up and case
analysis
in due course.

Best wishes, Joy Lucas

Candidates: VERATRUM, MERC, LEDUM, PULS, RHUS-T, PLAT

The way I customarily work, I would need to ask confirmatories of the
client in order to conclude. Would focus on Veratrum album, Mercurius.
Rhus tox and Ledum would try to rule out. Puls also possible, plat a
longshot.

Ancillary confirmatories (prelim):

Mercurius
RECTUM; ITCHING; anus; stool; agg.; after (K623, G532): agar., aloe,
alum., alumn., berb., bov., cahin., calc., carb-v., carbn-s., clem.,
coloc., euph., eupi., glech., kali-bi., kali-c., kali-chl., kali-sil.,
lyc., mag-m., merc., mur-ac., nat-m., nicc., nit-ac., ozone, pic-ac.,
plat., ptel., sec., sil., staph., sulph., tell., ter., teucr., thuj.,
visc., zinc.

Without any further information, might choose mercurius over Veratrum,
because of the above ancillary sx and the “falling apart” analogy. And
the fact that his haughtiness dropped in intensity during the interview
and may have been less vehement than a Verat. The seemingly vulnerable
bones are also suggestive of merc susceptibility. Merc can be kind of
an irresolute type without direction.

But verat also presents a totality which could easily be the best match,
if no other merc confirmatories can be found. Verat covers the case
well, including the coldness better rubbing, and is famous as a diarrhea
remedy.

Rhus-tox may also be a possibility because of the rubbing amel, (and it
can have cold skin) although only other really suggestive element is
that he is fair and obese (Calc constitution a possibility) and rhus-t
is the primary acute analogue of Calc.

This was all the time I wanted to spend on analysis without being able
to ask confirmatories/elimination questions.

MERCURIUS-haughty, rubbing amel, tickling skin eruption, mercury the

relates to a linguist (symbolically only). Is listed in R sided
generally.

Search for Fall apart (he says life is falling apart): The droplets have
a tendency to conglomerate to one big mass, but on being shaken they
