Tan's question regarding Melatonin. Well, first the literature, then my
experience with it follow below.
Melatonin is touted as the longevity hormone. It regulates the sleep and
wekefullness cycle or circadian rhythm. Restores youth. It was known to
ancient Indians as the secretion of the Pineal gland (or the Shankar's third
eye). Actually the reference to the "third eye" is interesting in view of
the modern discovery that there is a little known nerve from eyes to the
pineal gland. When light e.g., the Sun light or the full moon's light falls
on the closed eyelids, the nerve carries the message to the gland and the
melatonin from the Pineal gland is reduced, leading to interruption of
sleep. There is a long but interesting story in ancient Sanskrit related to
this episode in which the queen wakes up to the full moon's light deep in
the middle of the night. Actually women's sexual urge cycles may be
regulated by the moon's phases due to this nerve connection. After all what
will she do if she wakes up deep in the night and cannot sleep but she is on
the bed with her .....whoever!!!

My wife was diagnosed with severe clinical depression with classical feature
of psychomotor retardation. Psychiatric medicine was prescribed. I did not
start the medicine on her. Rather I succeeded in bringing her out of
depression completely by means of melatonin plus Menopace (multivitamin with
PABA) plus seven capsules of fish oil daily and daily walking and she
scratching my head whenever she would wake up. As is typical with psychotic
depression, she would wake up at 3 or 4 AM and would not be able to go back
to sleep. I would of course be deep asleep. What she would do under my
pre-instruction is that she would start to scratch my head which, for some
unknown reason, would induce brief bouts of sleep. She completely came out
of depression by this regime within three months.

Ratan.
