If we rely on Sue's idea of proving substances that have shown themselves to have medicinal properties we would have missed out on Lyc and Sil (and there are lots more!).
As a general rule, a lot of something is poison, a small amount has food value and a minute amount has medicinal values. (The quantity large varies from case to case, eg Salt (NaCl and Ars. Alb ArO3).

Dear Finrod,
I would not suggest relying on them as such but it would certainly be a
sensible starting point because we have a pretty good hunch that they are
commonly useful and the all the time and money will most likely be well
spent.
