Thanx again to all who responded to orig post.
However, many of my patients (+ friends included) are wondering how they can prevent osteoporosis, especially if they have a small frame &/or a sedentary job/family history. This is often why so many women go on HRT.
Other than walking & weight bearing exercise does anyone have any advice?
thanx

Re: Prevention of osteoporosis
Suggestion in addition to weight bearing exercise:
Good diet.
Keep hydrated, and maintain essential balance in calcium
transport/assimilation by
including green leafy veggies; some raw foods &/or juice.
Eat locally grown Organic stuff when/where possible.
Eat green leafy veggies, fresh, whatever is in season (kale is year-round in
most places)
Avoid ingesting poisons such as fluoride & chlorine.
Avoid the temptation to tinker with your metabolism using OTC supplements &
such.
Taking in too much calcium may actually create/exacerbate problem rather
than prevent.

No matter who you are or what your health, avoid "diet" products which
contain artificial sweetners!

Re: Prevention of osteoporosis
(1) Don't eat "excessive" protein -- it's acidifying, and that increases
the need of calcium, as one of calcium's jobs is to buffer acidity.
(2) Don't use "excessive" dairy products. Various studies show that those
countries in which milk consumption is highest (US, for e.g., and I forget
which others) are the very same in which incidence of osteoporosis is
highest. It's virtually unknown in places where the diet consists of
low-to-moderate protein intake and plenty of green veggies.

Oh, also, in some people calcium is not absorbed well because they need
*magnesium*. Veggies, of course, would be a good source of both, but for
some folks supplementing magnesium is a *very* good thing -- at least until
the needed remedy is taken.
