Does anyone have any suggestions for protecting summer squash plants from the squash bore worm?
Every year, I plant the squash and just as the plants start into full production the squash bore kills the plant. It is a kind of moth, that lays its eggs in the stem of the squash, and eats away inside the stem until the stem dies - the bore (now about the size on a couple digits of your little finger molts into the moth.
I would like to either plant something with the squash that discourages that insect, or apply something that will repeal it. I do not use poisons, so insecticides are not an option.
Tried making a remedy from one of the squash bores, but never got any concrete results from that process.
Warmly, Maria

Re: Summer Squash
You might try planting the squash under floating row covers, at least until the danger from the borer is past. A mechanical barrier, like a row cover, should keep the moth out. Squash borers are definitely a pain: your squash looks great, until suddenly it's dead.

Yes--homeopathy! Forget which remedy I have used successfully and need to look it up as
the season is upon us again. Had great squash last year with the treatment.
