OT: Algae DHA

Post by healthinfo6 »

I've been using a DHA made from algae, Algal 900 for a few years.
USA Today reported on DHA, that it doesn't help with Alzheimers
but does help with memory, study used Algal 900.

I agree and find it does provide noticeable benefits.
How it compares to fish, plant, clary sage seed oil can be debated
but it is sold OTC under many brands and there has been research on it.
CVS sells it under their name, I can buy 2 for 1 when there is a sale.
Is Algae DHA As Healthy as Fish Oil DHA?
Krill had, may still have, sustainability issues, was pulled from Whole Foods

Among many issues, here research concludes DHA raises bad LDL cholesterol more than EPA.

Some say not (eg Dr Andrew Weil and several others) but most experts doing research, say there needs to be more research to know what microalgal DHA does and does not do. It is not in the form used by the body, unlike DHA in fish oil, so there is concern to know more about it.
So far they find that DHA from algal oils tends to raise LDL wheras DHA from fish oil does not do so.
Researchers want to know what other differences there may be.
The FDA approved algal DNA in babies after NASA research to find a plant source, and becasue in babies they need DHA without too much EPA and fish oil provides both.
MicroAlgal DHA does so, not DHA in fish oil.
Algal DHA can be useful to vegetarians but they also need EPA.
SOME of the needed EPA can be made from ALA in plants.
New microalgal research is also resulting in algal source EPA.

Namaste,
Irene
