What remedies s/b given for a broken shoulder, happened yesterday?
First for tremendous pain, nothing yet heavy duty allopathically has been taken, like vicodin, oxycontin.only Motrin at hospital.
I read to wait to give Symphytum until bone is set, how long is that?

Arnica is almost always a good starting place for traumatic injuries, even when you know that other acute remedies will also be needed. In my experience Arnica is likely to be the first most useful one, for the initial pain and shock.

Then you can begin to notice what *parts* of the pain and shock and etc. may not be getting addressed by the arnica, and take it from there.

Other possibilities:
When pain is *tremendous* even from slightest movement, think of Bryonia.
When pain is "unreasonable" (e.g. hysterical with pain) or includes the "shooting pains" of nerve involvement, think of Hypericum.

Later you will likely be wanting remedies to help with damage to the bone covering (e.g. but not necessarily ruta), and to ligaments (e.g. ruta, rhus-tox).

There are many very useful rubrics specific to injuries -- but I have it on my other computer which I'm not with at the moment. But I gather you have those also, have a repertory for ideas at a later stage?

For Symphytum, it's not that you need to wait until a certain stage of *healing*, but rather you need to make sure that each part of bone is in the place where you will want it to be, same as e.g. for casting it.

Feel better quick!

PS for this kind of very painful injury, I find Arnica much more effective in at least 200c, and sometimes 1M. With the right potency, relief from the pain should be nearly immediate, and you can simply repeat when the pain begins to come back. I use either wet or dry per convenience, with very reliable results, including once after a snapped leg, and also after surgery. Arnica in high potency is just amazing.

Thanks Shannon!
It's not for me but a friend, slipped and fell.
How often and what potency do you give Symphytum? It doesn't seem like a remedy whose effects you notice immediately but bone growth appears on xray. A search shows positive reviews on Amazon of Symph 30C where people took it daily for a month after recommendations by a nurse or physical therapist like they would take a vitamin, mineral or herb.
Should I give it dry first, then by water dosing, how often?
Arnica should be water dosed as needed?
I haven't done much acute prescribing, mostly miasmatic..

I use it immediately after a bone break.
It halves the healing time at least and helps the pain.

Also Calc phos 6X

Broken Shoulder

Post by Dale Moss »

Irene is right about Symphytum's effect on pain. A few years ago I treated a hiking colleague who had a hairline fracture of a vertebra. She was amazed at how quickly her pain disappeared after a dose of Symphytum (as I recall, it was a 200c).
Way back, a psychologist I knew broke her shoulder; I volunteered to treat her, but being a good little patient she decided to do what the allopaths wanted. The healing was slow, and the next year, during physical therapy, she broke the shoulder again, same place. This time she asked for "everything you have!" She received Symphytum and Calc-phos., both probably in 30c, which is what I had at the time.
The following year she had a fall onto that same shoulder. This time it did not break.
Peace,
Dale
