Pain, swelling protocol for gelding a horse

Post by Diane »

Hello everyone,

Hopefully there is someone with horse experience in the group.

I had to have my eight year old stallion gelded today. It should have been done long ago but he was my husband's and I didn't have much say in the matter. My husband passed away in September and I am not a horse person, although I love Macchiato, Macchi for short.

Since I couldn't handle him and I live in rural Virginia, I had to make sure that I could find a forever home for him and didn't turn him over who would wind up trading him at the Stockyard. A friend of mine will add him to her crew of horses but he had to be gelded first. And then I'll have him trained, at least socialized, so that he's not too much of a handful.

It was painful to watch but now I'd like to make sure that he heals as quickly and with the least amount of pain and swelling as possible.

Does anyone have any experience with this and what remedies should I give him? Arnica and hypericum come to mind. I have Arnica in in my urgent care kit 30X and most of my other remedies are 30C. Can I add pellets to his feed or try to slip them between his lips? Or a water solution.

I should be able to figure this out but since September I'm unfocused, confused and very alone and overwhelmed. So I'm asking for your advice.

Thanks so much,
Diane

I once used Ignatia in a horse who perceived lost his position and ? depressed after gelding.
Depends on what presents. Certainly Arnica and hypericum seem sensible.
I used to when had a horse embed them in some bread, Jean

Agree arnica but

Water solution, well succussed and at least 200C, as often as needed, maybe every 6 yp 8 hrs as a starting place.
ALso calendula topically or hypericum/calendula mixed. You can spray it on aquoeus, or use cream.
