kidney stones New question...
Unfortunately I can't find it now, but -- years back someone had posted a series of experiences using "potato (peel) water" to dissolve kidney stones, and had all sorts of instances where it took a person from writhing in pain, to cured. As I remember, it was basically to make broth of potatoes (and their peels; maybe mostly their peels? I can't remember!), and have them drink just as much of it as they can, and that relief can come within a rather short time (hour or so? Can remember that for sure either!).
It seems like a can't-lose thing to try, if something surer and better understood not available?
(Some day *maybe* I will learn this whole "backing up" thing, so I don't lose so much every time I change computers!)

Re: kidney stones New question...
The potato water does not dissolve the kidney stones; it contains the alkaloid solanine, similar but weaker to atropine, that creates relaxation of the ureters, allowing the stone to progress fast to the bladder and relieves the pain by stopping the spasms.

Thanks Joe... I don't quite get what you mean... so when that happens then they pass? I want to be clear to my friend because I want them to have a huge success so they come back next time to us. The son-in-law has already been to the hospital and they are OF COURSE pushing surgery.
Thanks.

Re: kidney stones New question...
Ah, thank you! So it's not just green potatoes that have solanine -- and isn't it a problem to drink large amounts of it, then?
I thought solanine was what makes your tongue numb from green potatoes, or from tomato leaves?

Then they pass....it does not mean another one is not going to be formed, but that is another treatment where the cause of formation of the stones has to be addressed.

Re: kidney stones New question...
When they are green, there is more solanine, but there is still some left especially in the skin, not much so most of the people are not affected; boiling liberates and concentrates it, hence the activity of the water.

Re: kidney stones New question...
In India, we take the juice of raw banana stem- the interior most one. This part is seen after we remove all the sheaths one by one. This is cut to pieces and by smashing in mixie, the juice is filtered out and taken raw or mixed with buttermilk. This is claimed as one good way for removing stones.
Also, small cubical cut pieces of banana stem immersed in buttermilk( after adding salt, and coriander leaves) is a regular addition to our food. This is called as 'vazhai thandu pachadi' in Tamil and is a tasty traditional food.

Re: kidney stones New question...
do you mean the stalk/stem that the bananas are growing off of? or a section cut from the actual trunk, between the leaves and the ground? how much do you peel? how do you know you have peeled enough? i know from cutting down banana trees the liquid that flows from the trunk or stem where the bananas grow is VERY bitter. is this the juice you are speaking of?
thanks
