But when I take magnesium to sleep, it seems that most of them will do their work (put me to sleep, *if* I am lying down with eyes closed and ready to sleep; it is relaxing, not soporific) in about half an hour. Lately I usually use citrate, but have experimented with various ones, and notice only small differences. (I avoid oxide, because of the stomach acid issue you mention.) Maybe its a different degree of absorption needed for sleep vs. whatever else?

I have used a calc mag combo for years for cramps. I often have leg cramps that wake me up in the middle of the night
I find taking a few tablets relieve the cramping within 1/2 hour. Not sue whether it is the calc or mag that is doing it, but
it has been consistent for me. It is a citrate form that I use. Wish I could figure out why these happen to begin with
given the amount of calc and mag rich foods I eat but glad for a simple and immediate solution for immediate relief

Hi Tanya,

I too had been experiencing increasing leg and foot cramps over a 12 month period.

As I was doing too much sitting (an occupational hazard for homeopaths) I began to consciously include more exercise - daily walking, pilates, weights and a little aerobics. I was surprised to find that with the increased exercise the cramps disappeared, coincidence or not.

Fran.

Well sitting is certainly known to cause many problems. It clearly affects circulation and I find it to affect my knees adversely.
But not sure about the cramping. This began many years ago when I was very active, walking a lot on a daily basis. That is
when I discovered the issue of calcium deficiency and cramping and began using a calc/mag 2:1 ratio supplement.
Admittedly I have become pretty lax jn taking daily supplements and see cramping in the same way as when
young. I suspect an absorption issue with me is the problem. But I would never diss the use of exercise for better body
improvements on many levels. Your situation may simply show that many avenues can lead to the same sx.

Cramping can be from magnesium shortage or potassium shortage or both.

I'm wondering if this is what is happening to me. Has anyone experienced these "cramps".... is the pain extreme, intense, strong, and goes away with a bit of manipulating the painful area? I have this thing often... too often. It hurts, but always goes away. I thought it was some kind of connection to the back, neck and shoulder injuries I've experienced since 2010.

My recent blood test showed potassium shortages. I'm culturing raw coconut water to balance the shortage of potassium. I guess the only way to know if i's working is to do the blood test again. But if these leg pains are related to potassium then it means I need to culture and drink more of that expensive coconut water, huh? Sigh....

I hope someone has experienced these "cramps" Irene mentioned.

Thanks!
Vicki

I get horrific cramps in the legs. With me they are usually at night when I stretch out and begin to relax or in the
middle of the night and they wake me. They can be in the calves, arches, ankles, shins and prevent the leg parts
from even moving. I find my calc/mag supplement takes care of them quickly. They are aggravated/brought on
when I have chocolate which is known to block calcium. Sometimes they seem related to sugar as in the dried
fruit I had yesterday and then had leg cramping while asleep.

Not sure why I get them but began to get them yrs ago during my first pregnancy I think. Adele Davis’ book
on nutrition hipped me to the calcium connection. I have gone for long periods w/o cramping and then it
returns. So I think it is stress and nutritionally related.

They are are real pain in every sense of the word but always seem to be related in me to these minerals.

I have tried cell salts for a real quick absorption but they didn’t seem to help.

In recent years I started to get occasional cramps in calf or foot on stretching, and those always respond quickly to calcium. So add it to the list. :-)

other very good potassium sources would include (really any of the "yin" foods) e.g. bananas, oranges, melons, most fruits and most veggies. To more quickly identify the food element you're after, you might experiment with cell salts. Mag phos is often helpful for cramping, but I'm sure some of the others are too, can't remember just now. My experience is that when they help (as they often do!!), they help quickly.

But if you have access to homeopathic constitutional care, that would be even better, or maybe you've already done that…
