Kelly McGonigal: How to make stress your friend
14:28 minutes · Filmed Jun 2013 · Posted Sep 2013 · TEDGlobal 2013
Stress. It makes your heart pound, your breathing quicken and your forehead sweat. But while stress has been made into a public health enemy, new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.
Kelly McGonigal translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.

Re: Flip how you think about stress
Reaching out to others is good and indeed dissipates stress hormone - but that does NOT mean stress is good for you. Stress involves cortisol, a catabolic hormone that converts body protein to sugar - and that in turn needs insulin to dump it as central "viisceral" fat - the dangerous kind.
Cortisol is a functional left-over from when we had to run from tigers back to the cave and if we literally do not PHYSICALLY use it up by activity, it does body damage instead...also if there is more stress hormine than one can dissipate easly, it does very severe body damage as it is indiscriminate in what protein it takes to break down into glucose. (Leads to diabetes and stiiff cell walls that prevent toxins leaving and nutrients entering, among other things).
We need a SMALL amount of stress/cortisol, emphasis on SMALL. More is very damaging.
Namaste,
Irene

Re: Flip how you think about stress
I think this is in part another example of same word meaning different things. The "stress is good for you" people are using it more in a mechanical sense; pressure, impetus.
Whereas the I think more common use of it means *excessive* pressure etc.
Small non-excessive input stimulates; excessive input exhausts. The same word, "stress", is being used for each situation, but the two situations are not the same.

Re: Flip how you think about stress
Push-ups are "stressful" Doing push-ups every other day will build your muscles and may even benefit your health. Doing push-ups 8 hours a day every day is guaranteed to not build your muscles and harm your health.
Chronic stress kills. Periodic stress with rest periods in between strengthens.

Re: Flip how you think about stress
Latest research on exercise is quite shockingl One can exercise HARD for three separate 20 second sessions per day, in a way that gets the entire body stimulated - three times a week, so total 3 minutes a week... and get the same results as an hour a day at the gym:-)
ONE proviso - one must move around - not sit around - a lot every day.

Re: Flip how you think about stress
I want to add that people often carry chronic stress around with them in their minds and energy.

Re: Flip how you think about stress
I would add that periodic stress *which is within the organism's capacity" and within its recuperative capacity, strengthens.

Hi Irene ,
This form of exercise is called Tabata. I do 1 session a week (as well as lots of other exercise) . It is 20 sec hard fast exercise- there are 4 different exercises to do - 10 sec rest- repeat for 8 lots, rest 1 minute and repeat that another 3 times!! It takes 20mins in all.
