Hi Georgianna:
I am wondering what is causing this problem to become a problem now and it has occurred except for the one time till now.
With megacolon cats in conventional practice I usually advise that the owners give laxatone 1 - 2 inches twice a day. In addition they may also give laculose (enulouse 1-2 cc's day). You didn't mention if you do that regularly. Even if the cat is having normal stools it is helpful to do those things for the rest of it's life, unless she starts having loose stool.
As you probably already know, the other big constipation remedies are Aluminia and Opium.
However constitution treatment is probably the best way to go if those don't work.
I am cautious about giving them unless I feel the cat will be able to pass the feces. These remedies cause peristalsis movement. If the feces if too big this can become painful for the cat if it is too big to pass out.
Giving LRS fluids subcutaneously immediately when she goes one day without passing stool should also help.
Sometimes it is advisable to get an x-ray at the vet to see how much stool is in the colon before giving the remedy.
As an aside, giving milk can sometimes cause diarrhea (or softer stool ) and can help to pass stool in this situation.
Unfortunately this is a lifelong problem once it starts. Everything the stool gets stuck in the colon it tends to stretch the colon. Unfortunately at some point the colon loses its elasticity and the problem continues to worsen.
Prevention with on going laxative is one way to keep things moving.
In the worse possible situation you might also ask you vet to show you how to do an enema with a little soapy water if all else fails. This will stimulate her to go and should get things moving. Doing it sooner rather than later helps.
Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
Good luck.

Magacolon kitty
Re: Magacolon kitty
Dr. Elliot,
I did give Ringer's even on the first day of not passing stool, about
100 ML's. I was not aware of the benefit of using Laxatone daily but
I did use it as soon as she missed one day. I did give her (many)
enemas during the last bout but not this time since it was only the
one day that she missed going. Maybe it should have been done
immediately, without waiting even the one day. I really don't want
to take a chance that fecal matter will build up and probably should
have done that right away. She is slight enough that I can feel the
feces when it starts to build up in her colon. Thanks for all your
ideas. I don't give milk to the cats but in her case it may be a
good idea. I know this is a lifetime condition, darn. Hers or
mine? Wish she was in a nice one cat home where keeping tabs on her
would be so much easier!
Thank you for your 2 cents,
Georgianna

Re: Magacolon kitty
What about giving your kitty some "good quality" aloe juice in her water? Would she drink it? This has helped more than one person with major constipation!
