I left this comment at The Economist article about epigenetics.

You should read the article first. It is very informative. One thing that the author did not say is that the famine in the grandparents strengthened the grandchildren, not the plenty; sort of counter intuitive; until you remember that fasting is good for people.
My wife works at a special need department at our local high school, so I get to see neurologically damaged children. Frankly, it is very difficult to observe. And we both have to keep our mouths shut and not talk about avoiding wheat or vitamin D or anything that might help and could not hurt, because we are not doctors.
Below is my comment:

So, if gene expression in grandchildren can be altered by famine or plenty in the grandparents, then might also frankfoods, pesticides, additives, artificial food coloring that came to the fore starting around 1950 be expressing it's damage now in our children. Is it possible that our shockingly high rates of diseases like autism (that did not even exist before 1950) could be the result of generations of junk food. So, even if we stopped all junk food completely and utterly tomorrow, the rates of these dreadful diseases would continue to rise for at least a generation.
We made a really big mistake letting greedy and stupid people put these additives into our foods and over-processing our foods. Shame on us. We are complicit in the great act of criminal negligence in the history of the world. Just visit your local special needs department in your local high school if you think not.
