All Organic Stakeholders Urged to Invest in GMO Labeling
The Cornucopia Institute recently questioned why some of the most prominent and profitable companies in organics, including Stonyfield Farm, Whole Foods Market and Hain Celestial, had not financially contributed to what they described as “the food fight of the decade.” One organic company leader agreed to talk.
“Although I obviously felt personally targeted by Cornucopia’s campaign, I understand their concern that a number of organic stakeholders have stepped up while others had not yet invested,” said Hirshberg, board chairman and former CEO of Stonyfield. “I was happy to share with Cornucopia, during my conversation with Mark Kastel, that numerous companies have also funded the Proposition 37 effort and not the national Just Label It campaign, but that Just Label It has been nonetheless fully on board supporting Proposition 37.”
“There has never been a doubt about Gary’s commitment to the fight, at a national level, for GMO-free food, and the right for consumers to make an informed choice,” said Will Fantle, Cornucopia’s Research Director.
"Based on Gary's response, both with a personal financial commitment, after Stonyfield has already donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to the fight for federal labeling, and his outreach in California to solicit additional funding, we are delighted to remove his picture from the 'MIA' poster ," added Cornucopia Codirector Mark Kastel. Also, Applegate Founder and CEO, Stephen McDonnell announced the 50,000, contribution in support of the "yes vote" in California saying his company was, " … happy to support efforts that empower consumers to make informed choices about the food they purchase.”
Cornucopia will continue to ask corporate officers of the largest organic manufacturers and retailers to reconsider their lack of financial support for California’s critical citizen initiative, Proposition 37.
Stanford’s “Spin” on Organics Allegedly Tainted
A recent study by Stanford University researchers made international headlines when it claimed that organic foods are no more safe or nutritious than conventional foods. Organic researchers, farmers and advocacy groups immediately recognized the study as woefully flawed, and alleged underlying political motivations.
Cornucopia points to several additional ways in which the Stanford study is seriously flawed and should never have been deemed scientifically rigorous enough to make national headlines. Read the results of Cornucopia’s research and our full response here .
Two Short Videos to Educate People on GMO Foods
Nutiva, the world’s leading brand of organic hemp, coconut, and chia superfoods, has also created a new video on GMO, "The Video Monsanto Does NOT Want You to See! "
Based on the new report "GMO Myths and Truths" by EarthOpenSource.org, Mercola.com recently released a new video called “Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) - Myths and Truths ” to bring to light the myths on genetically modified foods.
Both videos encourage people to help get GMO food ingredients labeled. You can, too! Sign Cornucopia’s petition: http://www.cornucopia.org/2012/08/prop37/ .
Monsanto, Pesticide Companies Contribute
Another $5.5 Million to Kill GMO Labeling Initiative
Monsanto just gave an additional $2.89 million to defeat Proposition 37, which would require labeling of genetically engineered foods in California. Monsanto’s total contribution against Proposition 37 now stands at $7.1 million, according to The Right to Know Campaign’s finance disclosure records filed with the California Secretary of State.
“Monsanto wants to buy this election so they can keep hiding what’s really in our food,” said Gary Ruskin, campaign manager of the Yes on Proposition 37 campaign. “They are on the losing side of history. Californians want the right to know what’s in our food, and we will win it.”
