help with kitty

Post by Amity & Jason Engleson »

Hi! I am having an issue with my cat peeing on the carpet. She is 3 years old and has done this before- I thought it had stopped when our older cat died and now I have found her new spot(s) in a different room. The vet would like to put her on prozac and I do not want that at all. Any suggestions?? We cannot put a litter box where she is going because of space issues. I have been cleaning it each time to remove the smell and have started lining the area with paper so I can see it faster to get it cleaned up better. It is not always in the same exact spot but along one certain wall of our home. We found her as a 4 week old kitten and she used to sleep sitting up on the highest point she could find- like the back of the chair. Now she is more laid back but is skittish and hides if the doorbell is rung. She likes to hunt outside and has brought us lots of live mice and moles. We are using one of the pheromone collars right now and she is a lot more friendly and will come and jump on our laps- normally she is very independant- will come to us but then moves on. I know there is a solution that is not drugs so any help with this will be appreciated!!!
Thanks so much

Hello

-What has else has changed with her?
-is the litter cleaned regularly? daily?
-is it accessible
-why is she stressed?
-kids teasing her?
-other stress?
-sound like a complete case taking might find a solution for her fears.
-is she played with in her choosing
-petted/stroked?
-given love regularly?
-etc, etc,
-find the cause.

in the mean time you might want to try rescue remedy in her water to calm her down a bit till you can find a remedy based on a complete characteristic/personality/totality picture.

vet has ruled out any physically wrong, she is fed a mostly wet food diet (high quality). She is skittish and always has been. I clean her litter daily and have tried various litters and amounts. Kids do not tease her- she is very independant and likes her own space. Will run away if we get too close unless it is her choosing and then we can pet her until she again chooses she has had enough and will wander away. Dislikes loud noises of any kind. thunder, doorbell, busses that go by. one thing she has always done is been very quick in the litter box- she will pee as quickly as possible and then run away fast. same with poo she doesn't take the time to bury it. Her boxes are in a quiet part of the house and she still uses the box but apparently likes to use the carpet too. she was abandoned by her mother and was found in a drain pipe with her sister- who is with a relative and also pees around the house occasionally. I will try the rescue remedy- any tips on how to rep. for a cat?

HI Amity

rep her as you would a human. Be a detective, look for generals e.g. does she like the sun, or cold, etc. look for behavior patterns or mental characteristics. Be a detective. Look for any other characteristics that stand out.

RR is temporary. Get to the root of the issue to assist her.

Best Wishes
