FYI from Society of Homeopaths today

Post by Rochelle Marsden »

EU Directive: Herbal Medicines

Members have been asking about emails which have been circulating concerning possible restrictions to the availability of herbal medicines, and homeopathy. The emails describe an extreme picture and in that respect are not accurate.

By April 2011, EU Member States will be expected to fully implement the EU Traditional Herbal Medicines Directive. This will limit the availability of herbal medicines to those licensed by the manufacturers.

However, there is wide variation between Member States medicines agencies in the understanding of the directive and how and when to implement it.

This directive does not affect the availability of homeopathic medicines, books or homeopathy education or the right to practice homeopathy. Please be assured that the Society is actively engaged in responding to anything that might affect the availability of homeopathic medicines. The Society response to a recent consultation by the Medicines and Healthcare Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is on the members section of the website and the Society will be attending a meeting with the MHRA shortly.

If you wish to support the herbalists' planned lobby of the UK Parliament on 8thDecember visit the European Herbalists and Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association website for details at [ http://www.ehtpa.eu/
