Blood Builder
Re: Blood Builder
Hi All,
I have a 94 year old grandma who has recently been very anemic. Of
course the Dr suggested Iron supplements which upset her stomach. Her
levels are low enough to consider doing a blood transfusion. She says
she feels great but just recently gets really fatigued, may be do to
the fact she is a tough German woman. She still remains very active,
gets out daily and has lunch with friends and even goes to the gym to
build strength. Would love to hear any thoughts about remedies and
dosing. I was thinking I would either do a low potency like 12x of
Ferrum Phos or perhaps trying Ferrum Phos cell salt?
thanks much,
Lora Roberts

Re: Blood Builder
Ferrum Phos. is supposed to be good at helping absorption of iron - and is particularly useful if one cannot tolerate iron in crude doses. So you could make sure her diet is varied and healthy, make sure she is not drinking tea with every meal (this carried iron out of the body) and the Ferrum Phos. should take care of the rest.

If I may be so bold......why is she anemic????
A diagnosis would be very helpful for a real treatment............

Re: Blood Builder
I know that older people can become anaemic because they don't eat well, but I hope that
hasn't been assumed as the reason.
It's always important to rule out other causes. http://www.emedicinehealth.com/anemia/page2_em.htm
the chronic slow bleed being the one that made me aware of this issue.
Lead or other heavy metal exposure can be another cause. Lead
could be from old pipes, glazes on crockery, environmental, etc.
If her diet is a maintaining cause, then a lot more than iron should be addressed - definitely B12 and Vitamin C, but also
all the other vitamins, minerals, fibre, calories. If she does need to supplement iron, there are forms that don't upset the stomach,
and they are often in combination with other nutrients involved with absorption and utilisation of iron in the
body.

Re: Blood Builder
Dear Lora & all devoted homeos,
A thousand pardons from deviating from our first love but as the pt. is primary,
and I had an almost identical case, and it was easily fixed, I pass this on:
45 y.o. female comes to me dx'ed with severe anemia. She is prescribed
Ferrous Sulfate 300 mg daily. She experiences a lot of GI distress and reports
this to her dr. who tells her that she 'must' take it or she will need blood transfusions
He recommends taking with meals, milk, splitting the pills in half, anything as long
as she takes it daily. I put her on Ferrous Gluconate 15 mg daily and all her GI sx
disappeared.
N.B. She returns to her dr. who (nose in the air as she describes it) says "Well he is
only giving you 15 mg and you need 300 mg!" So I did a little research and discovered
that FS only has 5% absorbability. Thus FS only delivers 15 mg therapeutically leaving
the other 285 mg to play havoc in the GI tract!
Blessings,
Howard

Re: Blood Builder
I wish I had more info to give, but from my phone conversation with my grandma she said it is a old age thing. She said she never had this problem until last summer when she went sight seeing in the Grand Canyon and got pooped out going up 2 flights of stairs. She went to her Physician and her hemoglobin was 6 gm/dl, she was given a transfusion at that time. Since that time while on Iron supplements her hemoglobin waivers around 9 gm/dl and still feels tired. She says the Dr. told her there is no internal bleeding but she also stated she will not have a colonoscopy at her age because she doesn't want to go thru an aggressive treatment if there is a problem. She stays very active and feels she has had a long happy life.

Re: Blood Builder
Only just back from being away for a couple of weeks so don't know what thread this is referring to but Ferr Phos cell salts are a blood builder and helps the absorption of iron from food etc.

Blood Builder
If tea removes iron from the blood it shud be great for those that carry excess iron after allopathic dosing.
