Homoeopathy has wonderful relief or cure for pre-operative and post-operative disorders and a study of the following would give the practitioner an idea as to in which surgical cases there are remedies for various after-effects.

Staphisagria. - mechanical injuries from sharp, cutting instruments; after surgical operations, colic, f. i. lithotomy or ovariotomy.

Iodum. - woman, aged 28, after being delivered of a healthy child, was found to be as large as at full term, from dropsical effusion; a month afterwards four and a half gallons of a thick, dark and highly albuminous fluid were removed by ordinary paracentesis; about a year afterwards, at seventh month of a second pregnancy, four and a half gallons of fluid were drawn off, and six weeks later a normal labor occurred, and again, in about three months, four gallons of fluid were removed by aspiration; the effusion, however, continued, and ovariotomy was believed to be the only remedy; ovarian cyst.

China - woman, aged 37, small, thin, delicately formed, of a highly nervous organization, mother of several children, operation for strangulated hernia and formation of artificial anus.

Cicuta. - man; renewed cancer of lip after operation.

Crocus sat. - man, aged 50, subject to hemorrhoids, for which he had undergone an operation; icteric symptoms, with gastric disturbance.

Cuprum-met. - girl, aged 10 for two years; spasms from fright, after operation for harelip.

Hydrocotyle - man, aged 22, after an operation; gangrene of flap.

Jaborandi. - boy, aged 9, suffering seven years; recurrent squint after operation.

Kali-bich. - young girl, suffering several months, operation unsuccessful; nasal polypus.

Lachesis. - after operation for fistula in ano, complained of his head, particularly pain in left temple and occiput; aching pain in lumbar region; came home from work dizzy, faint and nauseated; talked incoherently, talked as it were in a strange language; since then quite without mind; will frequently cry and whine, then laugh in silliest manner; does not sleep at night; sleeps only a minute or two at a time during day; is often violent, only with difficulty can be kept in bed; endeavors to climb up bedpost; has an idiotic expression; articulation imperfect; tongue lolling about in mouth; eyes rolling vacantly; frequently rises, with great effort and awkwardness; body when standing bends toward left, must be supported; drags his feet in walking, direction of steps toward left; entirely unable to feed himself; seems indifferent to food; imagines he is followed by enemies who are trying to harm him; attempts to leave room as if frightened by visions behind him. ---mental disorder.

Lachesis. - man, aged 39, dark complexioned, emaciated, eight weeks ago operation for fistula in ano, suffering four weeks; mental disorder.

Merc-sol. - obtuseness of mental operations, with great inclination to sleep; heaviness and muddledness of head. ---typhoid.

Millefolium. - wounds; after operation for stone.

Nux-vom. - man, aged 50, suffering three years with rectal fistula after an operation for stone in bladder, suffering eight days; orchitis.

Pulsatilla - woman, aged 25, had a child eighteen months ago, has undergone successful operation for laceration of perineum; nervous affection.

Sulphur. - lady, aged 68, after operation for cataract; hypopyon.

Zincum met - mental operations very difficult; difficult to grasp ideas and to co-ordinate thoughts.

Bellis per - first remedy in injuries to the deeper tissues, after major surgical work.

Causticum - retention after surgical operations.

Methylenum coeruleum - surgical kidney with large amount of pus in urine.

Strontium Carb - for shock after surgical operations. neuritis, great sensitiveness to cold.

Veratrum alb - surgical shock.

Abrotanum - after operation upon the chest for hydrothorax or empyaemia, a pressing sensation remains.

Adrenalin - locally, solutions [1 : 10, 000-1 : 1, 000] sprayed or applied on cotton have been very efficient in bloodless operations about the eye, nose, throat, and larynx.

Asarum europaeum - darting pains in eyes after operations.

Calcarea fluor - used after operations, the tendency to adhesions is reduced.

Calcarea fluor - scar tissue; adhesions after operations.

Calendula - injuries to eyes which tend to suppuration; after operations; blenorrhoea of lachrymal sac.

Camphora - after operations, if temperature is subnormal, low blood pressure, 3 doses camph.

Collinsonia - said to be of special value when given before operations, for rectal diseases.

Colocynthis - cystospasm following operations on orifices. [hyper.]

Ferrum phos - after operations on throat and nose to control bleeding and relieve soreness.

Hamamelis - after operations, supersedes the use of morphia (helmuth).

Hecla lava - necrosis and sinus after mastoid operation.

Hypericum - relieves pain after operations.

Hypericum - quite supersedes the use of morphia after operations. (helmuth.)

Mezereum - ciliary neuralgia after operations.

Millefolium - after operations for stone.

Populus trem - good remedy in vesical troubles after operations and in pregnancy.

Senega - promotes absorption of fragments of lens, after operation.

Staphisagria - nausea after abdominal operations.

Staphisagria - severe pain following an abdominal operation.

Strontium Carb - chronic sequelae of haemorrhages, after operations with much oozing of blood and coldness and prostration.

Strophanthus - in pneumonia and in severe prostration from haemorrhage after operations and acute diseases.

Thlaspi bursa pastoris - bleeding in nasal operations.

Alumina - haemorrhage following tonsillectomy is controlled by rinsing out nasopharynx with a 10 % sol.

Ovininum - compare : orchitinum-testicular extract* (after ovariotomy, sexual weakness, senile decay).

Staphisagria - pain after lithotomy.

DISEASES IN WHICH POST-OPERATIVE DISORDERS CAN BE TRATED BY HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES AREGIVEN BELOW;

(Aneurism) Franklin (Surgery, ii, 201) mentions, to control the force of the heart's action and irritability of the arterial vessels: Acon., Act. rac., Gels., Cact., Dig., Spig., Veratr. vir.; to be followed by Lycopodium, Lach., Carbol. ac., Bry., Calc., Carb. v., Merc., Rhus, Sec., Sulph. Iodide of potash, in 5-grain doses, three times a day, also enjoys a good reputation; also ergotin. - helmuth (surgery, 3d edition, p. 355) witnessed good effects from gallic acid in half-drachm doses for the cure of internal aneurism in combination with rest. he also speaks highly of veratr. vir., bell., acon., dig., gels., and of the antipsorics: calc., lyc. and sulph.

(Synovitis) Synovitis - 2, bell., calc., caust., iod., kali carb., led., lyc., merc., rhus, sep. helmuth (surgery, 3d edition, page 515) has great faith in iodide of potash, 3-10 grains pro dosi ter die, in addition to rest, accomplished by the weight and pulley.

He also speaks highly of Veratr. vir., Bell., Acon., Dig., Gels., and of the antipsorics: Calc., Lyc. and Sulph.; the phosphate of lime or the sulphate of soda may be required, perfect rest being enjoined. - gilchrist (surgical diseases, p. 319) recommends for aneurism of the aorta: ars., cact., calc., carb. v., dig., graph., lach., lyc., natr. m., puls., rhus, spig., sulph., zinc.
