A bit of speculation

Post by Theresa Partington »

Can anyone think of a plant or an animal (?sea animal?) that might have the following characteristic: sets down roots and feels firmly grounded in a given location but can upsticks and move very happily and set down equally strong roots somewhere else. This came up in a discussion but is obviously not pathological in any way .... it just got me thinking.

Hmm, I was really thinking of the actual plants and animals. Starfish have that quality of being able to right themselves and reorientate themselves after being disturbed (although I couldn't see it in the mat med of the remedy). I don't really see where the other remedies you mention have that combination of flexibility and rootedness either but it will give me a good excuse to read them up again.

Gee--there are so many plants that move easily. I think of all the wild weeds in my garden
and the list is too long to enumerate. maybe some more characteristics.

Easy enough to convert them into actual animals and plants or sea substances :-)

Weeds spread rather than move, don't they? If they just moved there wouldn't be such a problem with them. There are ones like the sumach tree that send out underground runners and pop up somewhere else but they haven't actually moved, even though it might look like it if the first tree dies. Lily of the valley is another thought.(Convallaria).

Some water plants might move and resettle but not sure which.
I think sea creatures are going to be the best bet for something that actually moves and resettles without being on the move all the time.

Oysters cement themselves to one place for ever but limpets move a bit and don't always go back to the original base. Scallops 'nest' but can also 'jump' a distance when under threat.(Pecten jacobeus). Mussels move from time to time (Mytilus). Clams burrow, and move (Venus). I think i need to explore all these more - meanwhile it is all just making me hungry!

Hermit crabs - when they grow too big for their shell they move to a
bigger one -very hard to get out of the shell once they've moved in, so
much so that it gets carried round with them.

Now there's a thought! Doesn't apprear to be a remedy yet but that is not what I asked for. So they end up with layers of shell including the orginal? Thanks.

They use old empty shells - the original occupants dead and gone. When they outgrow a small shell they will leave it behind without a care, and go looking for a nicer, larger new one. Once they have chosen their new home they will scurry around with it on their backs and retreat into it if they feel threatened or tired.
