Ideas re receding gums?

Dear all -- thanks for any input. I'm working with merc sol, plus an electric/vibrating toothbrush (soft!) on the gums. Just started so no obvious regrowth, but pain is less.

Is the cause easily explicable, such as there being no teeth in the area?
