A recent genetic research into the descendants of those survivors demonstrated the presence of a homozygous gene (I think DLR C32) that prevents the entry of germs into the white blood cells; the same gene seems to be present in patients HIV positive but with zero viral load (meaning they have immunoglobulins demonstrating contact, but the virus has been eliminated).

Ah, that is interesting! So these people are immune from *any* (within currently studied parameters) microbes getting into the white blood cells? That sounds really useful! 
Re the HIV, how do they determine the presence or absence of viral load--I thought that detection of that particular virus was particularly difficult, or is that yesterday's hurdle and today's old news?

If the infectious mechanism is through penetrating into the WBC, yes, but that does not make them less immune/susceptible to other infections.
How do they detect the viral load?? I am not a microbiologist or a lab technician, I do know it is a more difficult, time-consuming and costly test, but a lot more precise.

The rats were infested by fleas, not ticks. The Flea bite introduces the bacilli into the host.
