Dear Mark,
Sorry, I didn't get back to you. I realise that it is a potential minefield
when people wave books such as those by Louise Hay, Caroline Myss, Detlefson,
and Christine Page. To say that disease is a manifestation of 'spiritual
decay' is bound to upset a lot of people and often they will have EVERY RIGHT
to feel aggrieved. Let us say a woman has fibroids - We frequently find that
these are MUCH more common in women in poor quality relationships, who feel
insecure in their situation. (Has anybody found a fibroid patient who is in a
long term, stable, happy relationship with a history of close
natural-parental care? - I am still looking)
If we wish to treat patients as people and not robots we need to look in
detail at their life patterns for maintaining causes - They may have many
habits that they are not conscious of themselves.
If we look at this woman she is on the surface a victim of neglect. Is it
fair to say that she is ill because of her 'spiritual decay?' On a personal
level this would be cruel indeed! However, if we look at it from a wider
perspective the disease is a result of people using women such as her for
their own convenience. You could argue that she is an accomplice and judge
her for that...But that would be harsh unless she was 100% conscious of her
role and able to pack her bags and leave easily.
I am aware that these ideas need to be used with a sophistication ( I have
noted like you that they often are not!) and an awareness of the tangled webs
we weave. Sadly it is often the VICTIM who suffers because of 'spiritual
decay'. eg. symptoms after rape, bullying etc. I acknowledge this 100%. Maybe
I didn't make this clear.
