vaginal bleeding in post-menopausal woman

Friends,
Many thanks for all your help regarding my friend with abnormal vaginal
bleeding. For one thing, you've taught me the latin/medical term for it --
metrorrhagia. There are many rems for it, puls being one.
My friend told me this key fact after we started talking back and forth
about the bleeding: it started after her pap smear (which was 4 weeks ago),
before taking puls (which was two weeks ago), and just at the point (about 3
weeks ago) when she resumed taking hormonal replacement therapy (estrogen I
imagine) after not having taken those pills for a few months! When she
started to bleed, she immediately stopped the pills and hasn't taken them
since.
Plus, she has just moved to Florida from Michigan (about 7 months ago).
SO, she will see her doc. But we're also thinking
- possibly the HRT caused the bleeding,
- maybe the new, kinder, gentler Florida weather has made her more
sensitive to her old dose of HRT,
- maybe puls, given another week or so, will address the problem (it's in
bold under metrorrhagia). And maybe she won't go back on any dose of HRT,
though it's up to her, o'course.

METRORRHAGIA = PROFUSE menstrual bleeding between the periods!!! This isn't
how you first described it. You must select this rubric with care. Best

I always thought metrorrhagia was any bleeding between menses or after
menopause, although the -rrhagia ending to the word would give one the idea
that etymologically it should indeed be profuse. In that case, what WOULD
be the correct rubric for what is commonly called,a t least here,
"spotting?"

Dear Rosemary
According to medical terminology "metro" means uterin "rhagia" means bleeding. So metrorhagia means uterin bleeding. To avoid confusing between physilogic uterin bleeding and pathological ones we call the physiological one( normal mounthly uterine bleeding ) "menorrhagia=mense+rhagia. Every uterin bleeding that is not during menses called metrorhagia. Spotting between menses are not physiologic ,so they are metrorhagia. But metrorhagia may be profuse or after menopause.

If you go back to a webster's of the time then METRORRHAGIA = PROFUSE
bleeding between the menses. More modern interpretations might now apply but
remember when the reps were written. Joy Lucas
