including family/friends in treatment

Post by Vera Resnick »

Thanks Fran.

In general I'm thinking of developing more guidelines in my practice
about when and how much to involve a family member or close friend in
treatment. I've also had situations of people taking themselves off
psychiatric meds even after I made it clear that I was opposed, and
without conventional OK, resulting in problems where the family blamed
homeopathy. But there are also situations where people are taking
multiple conventional meds, for physical and psychological problems,
and then when homeopathy is added to the mix they start getting very
confused, especially with older patients.

I'm also becoming more and more aware that often the person I see
across the desk during the session can be very different from the
person the world sees, especially in cases of mood swings, so
consulting with family and friends has become standard practice. I
think sometimes the tendency amongst some homeopaths is to feel that
you're not smart enough or a good enough homeopath if you can't suss
out the correct remedy within 10 minutes of looking at someone, which
is clearly not the right way to approach giving treatment IMO.

In the meantime, my involvement of others in treatment is more limited
to asking permission to phone family members/friends. Having someone
else sit in on the consultation is a double-edged sword - on the one
hand it gives commentary and more information, on the other hand it
could inhibit the patient from giving as much information as possible.

Any other views and practices on this? It would be interesting to hear.
