Cyst in muscle?

A family member has a problem that's unfamiliar to me, and I'm
wondering what thoughts anyone has. He's 23 years old, in generally
okay health (except for drug use, tendency toward lethargy, and I
REALLY WISH he would quit his pot and take the thuja I sent him several
years ago, argh.).

He's complaining about back pain, which he says is from what's been
called a cyst, in the muscle running along left side of his spine.
It's about half inch to left of spine, at about the level of bottom of
scapula. He's been told it's a cyst, and told that bodyworkers do feel
it, tho difficult for me to find. I *think* I do feel a small, hard
knot in the area. he says it pulls his spine to the left (toward the
cyst), because the muscles in the area of the cyst are "weaker", then
he elaborates that he thinks (was told?) they're shrunken (atrophied?),
and pulled by the stronger muscles(?) around the cyst.
He's trying to do strengthening exercises to strengthen his whole back
to increase stability, but "the only place I feel it is always right
there"--the area near the cyst becomes too painful to exercise much. I
didn't get more detail at the time, so am mainly wondering whether this
is a situation anyone here is familiar with. What would it be called,
and what rubrics might be relevant? I wonder if it would respond to
thuja (which still seems generally indicated), and whether repeated low
potencies would be able to work in spite of presumably continued drug
use? In past years he's managed really nothing at all in the way of
follow-thru (remedies received but never taken), but if I could manage
any relief of *pain*, maybe that would motivate him.
