Asymptomatic hypothyroid

Have just had a case in where the presenting complaint was an asymptomatic
low thyroid as found from blood tests.
The low thyroid is a side effect from a drug called Amiodorone which I
only found
when I looked it up in my BNF(Doctor's manual of drugs and interactions,
dosages, side effects etc)!!!!! The very healthy 76 yr old, who doesn't even
need glasses, no arthritis, (amazing) had a mitral valve replacement 5 years
ago due to a leaky valve , a condition was told then she has had for years.
After that she was put on Amiodorone. 18 months ago her regular blood tests
showed hypothyroid and she has been on thyroxine 75mg a day ever since. She
has absolutely no symptoms and anyway the thyroxine is not making any
difference. She also has to take Warfarin daily (wouldn't herbal Gingko be
a substitute????) and every other day a Frumic (diuretic) although there is
no evidence of oedema.
Basically I have taken a case history but not prescribed as there is nothing
to prescribe on. When she sees the consultant in May she will ask if she
must continue to take these drugs. If so I told her to return and I will get
the Amiodorone made up in potency to see if it will stop the side effect of
the hypothyroid. She left happy that she could talk about her worries and it
has cleared her mind about what to do.
Would anyone else have handled this any differently?
Regards,
Rochelle
