This suddenly occurred to me--why does it way "on waking"? I thought
that *by definition* night terrors happen *without* waking? Once the
child wakes, the terror is past, and they do not even remember anything
about it; they're drowsy, a little perplexed, and go straight back to
sleep--at least that's what mine did, and I thought that was typical.

Perhaps it's because they *seem* to be awake, even though they aren't?
I always felt like the "terror" was really on the part of the parents, since the child doesn't seem to remember it! (Watching it happen is enough to make the most skeptical person think of demonic possession!)

"Night terrors" is a sleep disorder characterized by extreme anxiety and panic and is different to simply waking up from a nightmare. The "terrors" usually begin a few hours after falling asleep. (Simple nightmares can occur any time during the sleep cycle.) The person may suddenly appear to be fully awake with eyes open, screaming and panicking, even speaking and walking about inside or outside the house, but they are actually still in a sleep cycle, stage 4 of sleep, or in REM sleep. Usually nothing can be done to calm the person during the "terrors" which can last up to 20 minutes, and may occur several times a night in extreme cases, and the person will often respond quite aggressively to any attempt at restraint. They often have no memory of the episode upon waking the next day.

Well, in my girl it *looked* like terror (and the "demonic possession"
idea is appealing too! :-) )--she shrieked, flailed, fought her way
free of the bed, and on one occasion when i couldn't wake up fast
enough, had nearly made it thru the front door, ready to run screaming
down the street! (Age 4.) And on the occasions when we were able to
grab her and try to comfort her, she didn't seem to register our
presence *at all*, just had to play out her internal script, then went
back to sleep. The fact that she didn't remember it later (whew), tho
a blessing, still... (BTW that and the rest of her stramonium-looking
chronic state were only slightly and briefly touched by stram, but
quickly and permanently ended by a single dose of lyssin. So I would
definitely add lyssin to the "night terrors" rubric!)

Night terrors?

Post by Irene de Villiers »

I believe these are two different issues.

There is the matter of night terrors that occur while asleep
(including perhaps while sleepwalking).
Then there is a separate issue of waking up terrified (without any
apparent reason, and not associated with dreaming).

Namaste,
Irene
